Volleyball goes 3-1 on weekend

The Yellowjacket volleyball team, fresh off a victory at the Mount Mary College tournament last weekend, was in Mankato, Minn. for a two-day tournament hosted by Bethany Lutheran College on the weekend.  Three straight wins to open the tournament gave them seven in a row to start the season, before they dropped their final match of the weekend.

In the opener, Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) had a strong showing in her hometown, leading the Yellowjackets with 12 kills en route to a 3-0 win.  Set scores in the tournament opener were 25-18, 26-24 and 25-12.  Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) had nine kills and Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) had 27 assists and three aces to lead the Yellowjacket offense that attacked at a 22.8% clip.

Defensively Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) had a team-high 18 digs, while Gosson led the way with 1.5 blocks.  The Yellowjackets had eight blocks as a team in the win.

In the second match on Friday the Yellowjackets again mowed down the competition, this time the hosts from Bethany Lutheran by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-22. 

Tynen and Gosson again paced the offense, with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.  Gosson was particularly effective, with a .588 attack percentage.  Dedrick had 33 assists, while Wirtz led the way with three service aces.  Wirtz also led in digs with 13.  Tynen and Emily Kadlec (Mora, Minn./Mora) combined for the lone block of the match for the Yellowjackets.

As a team the Yellowjackets had an attack percentage of .279, compared to just .131 for Bethany Lutheran.

The Yellowjackets dropped their first set of the weekend in the first match on Saturday, but still came away with a 3-1 victory.  Set scores were 25-17, 21-25, 25-14 and 25-18.

Tynen was once again the offensive leader for the Yellowjackets with ten kills and a team-high 31 attacks.  Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) and Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) were right behind her with nine and eight kills each.  Deadrick was again the top setter for the Yellowjackets, picking up 27 of the Yellowjackets' 28 assists in the match. 

On defense Wirtz again led with 13 digs.  She was followed by Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) and Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) who had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.  Vonasek also added a pair of blocks.

The Yellowjackets closed the tournament with their first loss of the season, falling in four sets to Wartburg, who entered the tournament as the 21st-ranked volleyball team in the nation.  Set scores were 28-26, 21-25, 19-25 and 23-25.

Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) and Tynen each had 14 kills to lead the offense.  Gosson added 11 kills.  Deadrick had 37 assists and three aces.  Four Yellowjackets were in double figures in digs, with Wirtz leading the way with a season-high 27.  Tynen (17), Deadrick (13) and Peterson (11) also had double digits. 

The Yellowjackets (7-1, 0-0 WIAC) will host the first of two UW-Superior triangles on Tuesday, September 11 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  They will take on Lakehead University out of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada at 4:00 p.m. and Northland College at 8:00 p.m.  Lakehead and Northland will play in between at 6:00 p.m.
