Another Successful Tournament

On Friday September 14, 2012, the UW-Superior volleyball team traveled to St. Paul, Minn. to play in Macalester Invitational Tournament at Macalester College. They would play four games against Carleton College, Presentation College, University of Minnesota-Morris, and Macalester College and they would leave with a 3-1 tournament record.

In the first set, the Yellowjacket took advantage of a big lead and defeated the Carleton Knights 25-12. However, the Knights came back strong to win the next three sets and beat the Yellowjackets 3-1 in the match. Although UW-Superior played well defensively, having six players with double-digit digs, their team attack percentages in the fourth and fifth sets were .061 and .143, respectively.

The bulk of the UW-Superior offensive was powered by Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) with 17 kills, Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) with 11 kills, and Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) with 10 kills. Keely Dearick had 40 assists.

After only their second defeat of the year, the Yellowjackets got back to their winning ways and handled the Presentation College Saints in three sets. Lead again by Tynen who had 13 kills, the Yellowjackets improved their attacking percentage from the previous game to .337 with 48 kills in 101 attempts.

UW-Superior was able to overcome 63 digs and 11 blocks by the Cougars and win three of the four close sets. The offense in Saturday's first match was powered by Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and her 13 kills. Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) and Tynen also chipped in nine kills each to help the Yellowjackets to the victory.

Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) played strong with 19 digs.

Yellowjackets 3, Macalester College 1

Defense helped guide the Yellowjackets to victory over the Macalester Scots as the team combined for 66 digs and six blocks. Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) led the defense with 17 digs and had one ace on the night. Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) and Deadrick also sneaked two aces past the Scots as they improved to 11-2 overall.

The Yellowjackets (11-2, 0-0 WIAC) will host their second triangle of the season on Tuesday September 18, starting at 4:00 p.m. when they take on the Lakehead Thunderwovles in another exhibition match.  They will then take on the College of St. Scholastica at 8:00 p.m. Lakehead and St. Scholastica will play 6:00 p.m.
