To say that the UW-Superior women's basketball team has been on a quite a roll as of late could be considered a bit of an understatement.
After all, it isn't very often that teams get the chance to set a school record for victories in a season. And that's exactly what the Yellowjackets did with their win over UW-River Falls Wednesday night.
Saturday afternoon, the Yellowjackets looked to continue their winning ways when they hosted the UW-Platteville Pioneers at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
And the Yellowjackets did just that, pulling away late for a hard-fought 65-59 victory that keeps UW-Superior in at least a tie for first place in the WIAC standings. With the win, UW-Superior upped their overall season mark to 15-3 while also moving to 7-2 in league play. The Pioneers meanwhile dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-8 in WIAC action.
The Yellowjackets got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-4 in the first 6:25 of game as Melissa Carmody scored four points while Claire Poad, Taylor Cropp and Taylor Lorbiecki all scored baskets for the Pioneers.
UW-Superior came right back, scoring the next 10 points for a 14-10 advantage after a Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) layup with 10:16 remaining in the opening half. Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) started the run for the Yellowjackets, knocking down two free throws with 13:35 left and was followed by buckets from Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders), Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) while Nett added a jumper at the 10:50 mark for a 12-10 lead.
The Yellowjackets maintained their lead over the next several minutes, taking their largest lead of the first half at 22-15 on a layup by Nett with 4:05 showing on the clock.
UW-Platteville staged a rally of their own from there, scoring the next six points to come to within 22-21 on an Alyssa Krajco jumper at the 1:41 mark before the Yellowjackets headed into the intermission holding a 25-23 edge.
Matters remained tight early in the second half as the two teams traded scores, leading to a 34-34 deadlock when Kaitlyn Pleau connecting on a jumper with 15:22 left in regulation.
The Yellowjackets scored the next nine points to take the lead for good however as Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 37-34 game with 14:58 left in the game. Linzmeier added a three-point play on the next possession before Urmanski's second three of the game gave UW-Superior their largest lead at 43-34 at the 12:12 mark of the second half.
UW-Platteville refused to wilt and staged another comeback, cutting the lead to 57-55 on a jumper by Krajco with 2:23 showing on the clock.
But the Yellowjackets got four free throws from Peterson on the next two possessions to make it a 61-55 game.
From there, Urmanski hit four more free throws in the final 22 seconds to help seal the victory.
The Yellowjackets had four players score in double-figures, paced by both Urmanski and Peterson who finished with 16 points. Nett and Linzmeier each added 12 points for UW-Superior.
Poad had 11 points for the Pioneers while Liz Lawinger and Carmody each had 10 points for the Pioneers, who only connected on 23-of-65 (35.4 percent) of their shots for the game.
Milestone Update: Urmanski moved into sixth place on the all-time scoring list and now has 1,067 points. Next up is Mandy Giffen (1994-99) who is fifth with 1,077 points. Urmanski also jumped another spot on the all-time games played list. She is now tied for sixth with 94 games played. Her next game will move her into a tie for fourth with Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) (2008-12) and Stephanie Janigo (2001-05).
