With just over 19 seconds left in regulation Thursday, the UW-Superior men's basketball team found themselves trailing the host UW-Oshkosh 68-63 following a free throw by Titans' guard Jade Royston.
Even with the odds stacked against them, the Yellowjackets came roaring back however. And the main catalyst proved to be senior Trent Davis (Apple Valley, Minn./St. Bernard's). Davis scored five points in the final 19 seconds, including knocking down a game-tying three-pointer in the final two seconds of regulation.
From there, the Yellowjackets took the lead in overtime on a layup by Bronson Byrne (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) and never looked back on the way to posting a dramatic 80-77 overtime victory that ups UW-Superior's record to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in WIAC conference play.
Davis' flurry started with a driving layup with 13 seconds remaining that brought the Yellowjackets to within 68-65 before an intense trap by Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) and Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) resulted in a steal with just less than five seconds left.
The resulting cross-court feed found Davis at the left wing and he calmly knocked down a long three to send the game to overtime even 68-68.
Following Byrne's layup to give the Yellowjackets a 70-68 lead, two free throws by UW-Oshkosh's Cory Nickel again evened matters at 70-70 with 4:06 left in the extra session.
But Burch's three with 3:55 left gave UW-Superior a 73-70 lead they would never relinquish.
Two more free throws by Royston brought the Titans (6-7, 1-3) to within 73-72 at the 3:30 mark of overtime.
UW-Oshkosh would get no closer however as Davis and Brendan Bauer (Eleva, Wis./Gilmanton) each converted three-point plays in the last 3:03 to help seal the victory.
Neither team was able to gain much of an edge in the first 16 minutes of the first half.
The Yellowjackets finally gained an edge late in the half as two free throws from Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) gave UW-Superior a 31-24 edge with four minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
UW-Oshkosh responded by scoring the next 12 points, taking a 36-31 lead on a Royston layup at the 1:45 mark before four points from Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) brought UW-Superior to within 36-35 at the half.
The Yellowjackets appeared to take control again in the second half, taking advantage of a 13-4 burst to take a 48-40 lead on a Davis three with 15:09 left on the clock.
UW-Oshkosh again rallied back, taking the lead at 52-51 on a free throw by Royston before a driving layup by Royston with just 1:53 left gave the Titans a 63-55 lead. The Yellowjackets ended regulation on a 13-5 run to force overtime.
