With a frustrating loss already in the books for weekend, the UW-Superior women's basketball team entered Saturday's road game against UW-Platteville determined not to head home with a two-game losing streak in tow.

And the Yellowjackets came through in fine fashion, getting a balanced all-around effort and 18 points from Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) to pull out a 71-64 victory over the Pioneers at Williams Fieldhouse in Platteville.

Displaying increased energy from their loss on Thursday against UW-Oshkosh, the Yellowjackets came out strong from the get go against the Pioneers, keeping matters tight through the first 18 minutes of the opening half.

After a jumper by UW-Platteville's Melissa Carmody gave the Pioneers a 25-24 edge with 2:13 remaining in the half, a three-pointer by Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) gave the Yellowjackets a 27-25 advantage with 2:05 showing on the clock.

UW-Superior would score again on the next possession, getting a layup from Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) to up the lead to 29-25 before a long three-pointer by Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) in the final minute gave the Yellowjackets a 32-27 advantage at the half.

Matters remained tight early in the second half, leading to a 43-43 draw with 11:20 left following two free throws from Elizabeth Lawringer.

The Yellowjackets scored the next five points however to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Linzmeier gave UW-Superior the lead for good on the next possession, knocking down two free throws with 10:36 left for a 45-43 lead before adding a three-point play at the 9:50 to give the Yellowjackets a 48-43 edge.

UW-Superior built the lead to 64-57 after an offensive rebound and put-back by Carmen Watson (Milwaukee, Wis./James Madison) with 2:08 left in regulation.

The Pioneers responded by scoring the next five to come to within 64-62 following a three by Lawringer with just 1:21 on the clock.

A driving layup by Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) with 46 seconds left upped the lead to 66-62 and UW-Platteville got no closer than four points the rest of the way.

Along with Linzmeier's 18 points, the Yellowjackets got 14 points from Nett in improving to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in WIAC conference action.

Lawringer led all scorers with 22 points while Alyssa Krajco and Claire Poad each added 10 points for the Pioneers (5-10, 1-5).

The Yellowjackets return home to play Northland College at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium Sunday.  The opening tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
