What began as the longest road trip of the season for the Yellowjacket women's basketball team in the early morning hours of January 3 culminated on Sunday afternoon at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  The road-weary Yellowjackets returned home to play their third game in four days, hosting the Northland College Lumberjills.

After a slow start, the Yellowjackets found their form and pulled away from Northland, winning 53-27.

The Yellowjackets never trailed in the game, as Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) got things started with a layup right off the opening tip-off to make it 2-0.  From there the offense was slow to come from both teams, with both teams in single digit points through almost nine minutes.  Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) laid one in to break a 9-9 tie and put the Yellowjackets in double figures.  The bucket also got the offense going and the Yellowjackets pulled away.

The Yellowjackets outscored the Lumberjills 22-7 for the remainder of the first half, paced by Carmen Watson (Milwaukee, Wis./James Madison)'s four points, and led Northland 33-16 at halftime.

Just as she did in the first half, Urmanski got the offense started again, hitting a jumper 1:14 to push the lead to 19 points.  Yellowjackets got up by 20 when Nett drained a three with 9:43 left to make it 42-22.  As the half progressed the Yellowjackets emptied the bench and scoring continued to spread out.  Dana Karlstad (Eleva, Wis./Eleva-Strum) got into the act, making the layup to push the lead to 23.  Emily Krueger (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) hit a three with 80 seconds left in the game to make it a 24-point lead, and Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) got into the act, making a layup with four seconds left to close out the scoring for the Yellowjackets and give them the victory.

The Yellowjackets shot 48.3% from the field in the first half and dropped off to 33.3% in the second, but it wasn't noticeable as the Lumberjills struggled mightily after the break, hitting just three shots and going 14.3% from the field.

Urmanski paced the Yellowjackets with nine points, while Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) and Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) had eight points each.  In total 11 Yellowjackets scored in the game.

Nett, who had seven points, led the Yellowjackets with five rebounds.  Linzmeier, Urmanski and Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) each had two assists to lead the team.  Watson and Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) each had a block for the Yellowjackets, while Urmanski led with five steals.

Sara Hoge led the Lumberjills, scoring a game high ten points.

Milestone Update: Urmanski now has 1,019 points in her career, good for seventh on the all-time scoring list.  Next up on the chart is Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) (2008-12), who sits sixth with 1,057 points.  Urmanski has 240 assists, which is third all-time and 23 behind Kati Galovich (2001-05) on the list.  Her 174 three pointers and .859 free throw percentage are already school records.  Finally, in her next game Urmanski will reach the top ten in all-time games played with 92.

The Yellowjackets (12-3, 4-2 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, January 12 when they host UW-Whitewater at Mertz Mortorelli Gym beginning at 3:00 p.m.
