The Yellowjacket volleyball team played their second straight triangle on Saturday, heading down Interstate 35 to Northfield, Minn. to play a pair of matches on the campus of Carleton College. After a split yesterday, the Yellowjackets weren't as fortunate on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches.

Carleton 3, Yellowjackets 0

In the first match of the day on Saturday, the Yellowjackets went down in straight sets to Carleton College, 26-24, 25-23, and 25-9.

The first two sets of the match went the distance, with the Yellowjackets losing both by the slimmest of margins. In the first set the Yellowjackets grabbed the lead early, opening up a 9-5 edge thanks to a pair of kills from Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and back-to-back service aces from Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko). Carleton countered with a 5-0 run to take a lead. The rest of the way neither team was able to go on an extended run and neither team was able to build a lead of greater than two points. A kill by Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) gave the Yellowjackets a 24-23 advantage, but the Knights took the final three points to get the victory in the first game.

Carleton won seven of the first ten points in the second game but the Yellowjackets quickly came flying back. A pair of Zimmerman kills helped get the Yellowjackets to within a point, and then three Knight errors while Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) was serving gave the Yellowjackets the lead. The Yellowjackets kept the lead, building the edge to as many as four points, until Carelton rallied to tie the game at 23-23. A pair of Yellowjacket errors couldn't have come at a worse time, however, and the Knights closed out the set and grabbed a 2-0 lead.

The third set was all Carleton. The Knights won the first three points and never looked back, pulling away early and cruising to a 25-9 win.

Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) led the Yellowjackets with nine kills, while Zimmerman added eight. The Yellowjackets had 30 kills for the match, but only posted an attack percentage of .070. Deadrick led the Yellowjackets with 17 assists, while Mikayla Bock (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) had 10. On defense Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) led the Yellowjackets with 13 digs.

Buena Vista 3, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjackets took an early lead but Buena Vista went on a 6-0 run to jump out to an 8-2 lead. The Yellowjackets were never able to pull themselves back into the game, falling behind by as many as seven points and ultimately dropping the set 25-17.

In the second set the Yellowjackets pulled even. With the scored tied at 7-7, the Yellowjackets pulled away thanks to the serving of Zimmerman. She served the Yellowjackets to five consecutive points, helped along by a string of Buena Vista errors to give the Yellowjackets a 13-7 lead. The lead peaked at seven points, as a kill by McKenzie Kanipes (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) made the score 23-16. Each team won two more points, giving the Yellowjackets their first game victory of the day and tying the match 1-1.

The third game was tight, with the Yellowjackets grabbing the lead several times and Buena Vista continually coming back to tie. With the score tied 15-15 Buena Vista took two points in a row to secure the lead for good. A pair of 3-0 runs later in the set gave them a 23-17 lead. The Yellowjackets posted a late rally on the serve of Kanipes, pulling back to within two, but Buena answered, winning two more points to take the game and a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the early going of the fourth set Buena Vista charged ahead. The Yellowjackets rallied, however while Peterson was at the service line. Down two at 14-11 the Yellowjackets went on a 7-0 run, aided in that stretch by three Autio kills, to take a 18-14 lead. Buena Vista had a quick answer, winning the next four points to again tie the game. A Zimmerman kill broke a tie of 19-19 and following a service point the Yellowjackets were up two. A later Tynen kill stretched the lead to three, but Buena Vista went on a 6-1 run to win the game and the match.

Autio finished the match with a team-best 13 kills, while Zimmerman added 12. The Yellowjackets improved their attack percentage to .207 in the second match of the day. Deadrick had 40 assists to pace the offense. Peterson again led the Yellowjackets with 24 digs. Tynen added 12 digs and Walerius had 11. The Yellowjackets also had eight blocks, led by Kanipes, Autio, and Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) who had three block assists each.

The Yellowjackets (15-10, 1-5 WIAC) will play at Finlandia University on Wednesday, October 16. The match with the Lions is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
