Box Score

Whitewater 3, Yellowjackets 0

The Yellowjacket volleyball team took the court for their final WIAC match of the season on Saturday, taking on UW-Whitewater a day after being eliminated from WIAC playoff contention. When all was said and done, Saturday's match may have also been the most difficult of the season for the Yellowjackets.

Whitewater came out and put the pedal to the metal early, taking down the Yellowjackets 3-0 in a match that lasted a little more than one hour.

The Warhawks finished the day with a .400 attack percentage and held a decisive advantage in kills.

In the opening set the Warhawks grabbed the lead early, opening up a 9-2 lead. Later in the set the Yellowjackets began to close the gap, winning four of five points to pull within three at 15-12. Three of the four points came courtesy of kills by Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater). A 4-1 run quickly gave Whitewater its cushion back and they would pull away in the end and win the set 25-18.

The second set was all Warhawks, as they won the first five points and again opened up a huge lead early. After giving the Yellowjackets two points to stop the bleeding, Whitewater went on a 9-0 run to go up 15-2. The Yellowjackets would never climb back to within single digits and the Warhawks took the second set 25-10.

Despite the first two sets being rough for the Yellowjackets, they kept up the fight and made the Warhawks a little nervous in the third set. Whitewater again took an early lead, but this time the Yellowjackets found an answer and battled back. Down 11-5 a Whitewater error gave service back to the Yellowjackets. Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) served the Yellowjackets to 11-7 with an ace. The Warhawk advantage stayed at four until the Yellowjackets rallied to tie it. With Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) serving, the Yellowjackets scored consecutive points on an error, a kill from Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) and a service to make it 14-14. Deadrick then served two more points to give the Yellowjackets their first lead since early in the opening set.

The Yellowjackets stayed ahead until Whitewater won five of seven points to take a 22-21 lead. The Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance, and tied the score at 25-25 on a kill by Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello). The Warhawks were able to win the final two points to close out the set 27-25, and the match 3-0.

Tynen was the only Yellowjacket to reach double figures in kills, finishing the day with 11. Deadrick had 23 assists and also added three service aces. Tynen had a team-high eight digs. Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) and Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) each had two block assists.

The Yellowjackets (16-12, 1-7 WIAC) will play at St. Scholastica on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
