Yellowjackets drop first games at Finlandia tournament

Lindsay Garay

Hope College 6, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

When someone thinks of being shutout the first thing that comes to mind is, “wow they really need to find a way to get the bat on the ball.”  This certainly wasn't the case in this particular game as crucial errors cost the Yellowjackets in a 6-0 defeat in the hands of Hope College.

The Flying Dutch wasted no time trying to find ways of getting on base, whether it was a hit or an error.  The scoring got started in the first inning when Kate Laverty was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on an Emma Page walk.  Things only got ugly for the Yellowjackets when Laura Tjepkema reached on an error by the shortstop that scored Laverty to give the Flying Dutch a 1-0 lead.  Another error cost the Yellowjackets two more runs when Peyton Wells hit the ball to first base where it was booted.  This scored Tjepkema and Page to extend the Flying Dutch lead to 3-0.

Hope College added another run in the fourth inning when a Kelsey Cooper single sent Jess Kohlhoff, who led off with a walk, over to third base.  Kohlhoff somehow score during Jenny Langill's at-bat to make the score 4-0.

The Flying Dutch closed out the scoring in the fifth inning with two runs when Laverty led off with a single.  She eventually advanced to third base when Tjepkema advanced all the way to second base on an error by the second baseman.  This set up a 2-RBI single by Wells to extend the Flying Dutch lead to 6-0.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) took the pitching loss for the Yellowjackets.  She gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three in five innings of work.

Edgewood College 6, Yellowjackets 2
Box Score

The Yellowjackets couldn't use the previous game as motivation as they fell to Edgewood College 6-2.

The Eagles kicked-off the scoring in the first inning when Carlene DeCoster led off with a walk.  She eventually advanced to second base when the Yellowjackets failed to convert on a double play attempt when Rachel DeJongh hit a ground ball.  A Jessica Spitzer walk loaded the bases for Jackie Diesch, who hit into a fielder's choice that scored DeCoster to make the score 1-0 Eagles.  The Eagles added another run when DeJongh scored on a double steal attempt from third base to make the score 2-0.

An error cost the Yellowjackets once again, this time in the fourth inning when Tiffani Pierce roped a double to left field.  This scored Jamie Spangler, who walked, all the way from first base on an error by the left fielder to make the score 3-0.

The Yellowjackets rebounded with a run of their own in the fifth inning when Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) singled and scored on a RBI double by Lindsey Garay to close narrow the Eagle lead to 3-1.  However, the Eagles pulled away in the sixth inning when Dylan Bahrke smacked a three-run home run to make the score 6-1.

Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) answered with a home run for the Yellowjackets in the seventh inning to pull the Yellowjackets within 6-2.  This is all the Yellowjackets came up with as their struggles with producing with runners on base continued.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) got the start on the rubber for the Yellowjackets.  She surrendered six runs (three earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three in the complete game effort.

Lake Superior State University 5, Yellowjackets 3
Box Score

For the first time this season, it was the Yellowjackets setting the tone early in the contest.  However, games are won at the end and the Lakers did just that as they came from behind to defeat the Yellowjackets 5-3.

Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) led off the first inning with a walk.  This plated Garay, who blasted a two-run home run to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.  Brugman doubled later in the inning, setting up an RBI single by Haider to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0.

That was all the Yellowjackets came up with as the Lakers closed out the contest with five runs.  The Lakers added their first run in the fourth inning when Heather Cuthrell led off with a single, and Felicia Gingrich followed that up with a walk.  They both advanced to second and third base on steals before Cuthrell scored on a Kirsten Thompson sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.

The fifth inning proved to be big for the Lakers, coming up with four runs.  Alyssa Avila and Danielle Reveley produced back-to-back singles to set the tone.  Avila scored on an Amanda Maxon single to narrow the Yellowjacket lead to 3-2.  Cuthrell later reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Reveley to third base.  A Gingrich walk loaded the bases for Alyssa Boucher, who produced a two-run single to give the Lakers a 4-3 lead.  Thompson followed that up an RBI single to extend the Laker lead to 5-3.

Gross suffered the pitching loss for the Yellowjackets, giving up five runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out one batter in the complete game effort.

The Yellowjackets (0-3, 0-0 WIAC) will take on University of Dubuque at 7:15 p.m. (est) and Milwaukee School of Engineering at 9:00 p.m. (est) in Marquette, Mich.  Both games are apart of the Finlandia Dome Tournament.
