In a season full of firsts, the UW-Superior women's basketball team figured adding another one would be a perfect way to conclude their regular season home schedule for the 2012-2013 campaign.

And the Yellowjackets did just that, rallying back from a 17-point first half deficit to outscore UW-Oshkosh 45-32 after halftime on the way to posting a 66-58 over the Titans at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The victory not only upped UW-Superior to 18-4 overall and 10-3 in WIAC conference play, it also gave the Yellowjackets a perfect 10-0 record at home for the season, a first under coach Don Mulhern.

Saturday's win also gave the Yellowjackets a season split against the Titans (17-4 overall, 9-3 WIAC), who entered the contest sitting alone in second place in league play.

UW-Superior found itself in a hole early in the first half, as the Titans overcame an early 4-2 lead by the Yellowjackets to score 13 of the next 15 points to take a 15-6 lead on a layup by Katie Kitzke with 9:52 left in the opening frame.

The Titans continued to surge, going on an 11-3 run over the next 5:27 to take their largest lead of the game at 26-9 following an inside score from Sarah Stecker with just 4:25 showing on the clock.

UW-Superior came right back, getting a jumper from Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake), two free throws from Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) and back-to-back, three-point shots from Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) on the way to scoring the last 12 points of the half to trail 26-21 at the intermission.

A driving layup from Urmanski just 1:29 into the second half cut the deficit to 28-27 with 18:31 remaining in regulation.

UW-Oshkosh went on another run from there to take a 45-35 lead when Megan Wenig connected on a three-pointer at the 12:50 mark of the second half.

The Yellowjackets fought their way back, getting a driving layup from Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and four more points from Urmanski to cut the deficit to 45-43 with 10:10 showing the clock.

Two free throws and a layup by Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) over the next 2:55 gave UW-Superior the lead at 49-47.

The Titans evened matters 49-49 on the next possession as Stecker scored from inside with 5:59 remaining in regulation.

But Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) scored on a driving layup and then connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key on the next two possessions, giving UW-Superior a 54-49 advantage they would never relinquish.

Three straight jumpers from Peterson eventually gave the Yellowjackets their largest lead of the game at 62-52 with just 2:54 left in the second half.

From there, the Titans got no closer than four points as Nett hit two free throws and scored a layup in the final 22 seconds to seal the victory.

UW-Superior was paced by Urmanski with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.  Linzmeier added 13 points while Nett and Peterson each had 12 points.  Peterson also chipped in with a team-leading nine rebounds in the win.

The Titans were led by Kitzke with 17 points.   Katelyn Kuehl had 12 points for UW-Oshkosh as well.

Milestone Update: Urmanski played her 98th career game and is now only three away from breaking the school record. Her 18 points give her 1,110 for her career, fifth all-time. She also moved into second place on the all-time assist list and now has 264. Peterson had two more blocks, giving her 67, leaving her 20 blocks away from moving into second place on the all-time list. Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) moved into a tie for fifth on the all-time games played list with 95.

UW-Superior hits the road to take on UW-River Falls on Wednesday.  Game is scheduled for 7 p.m.   The game can be heard locally on 91.3 FM KUWS.  Matt Johnson will be on the call.
