Yellowjackets split on day one in Sunshine State

Kristen Haider

Wheaton College 5, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

While the Yellowjackets struggled to find an offensive rhythm in their first contest in the sunshine state, the Thunder from Wheaton College came on top in that department.  They doubled up the Yellowjackets in the hit category as they cruised to a 3-0 victory.

Alyssa Leonard kicked off the Thunder offense in the second inning when she reached first base on a missed play by the Yellowjacket centerfielder.  This set up an Ellen Radandt RBI-double to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead.

The fourth inning saw Wheaton College take a 2-0 lead when Jessica Goeke doubled and stole third base.  She eventually scored when Christina Sandstedt reached on an error.

The Thunder tacked on one more run in the sixth inning when Katie Yergler singled and stole second base, then advanced to third on a Goeke sacrifice bunt.  Sandstedt finished the job when she drove in Goeke with an RBI-single to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) took the loss on the rubber for the Yellowjackets.  She tossed a complete game, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits while fanning a pair of batters.

Yellowjackets 5, Rockford College 0
Box Score

The bats came alive for the women in yellow and black as they scattered eight hits.  As for the Regents, the offense couldn't find a rhythm.  This proved to make the difference for the Yellowjackets as they blew past Rockford College 5-0.

No time was wasted by the Yellowjackets as they came up with two runs in the first inning.  Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) and Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led the inning off with back-to-back singles.  Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) followed that up with a rocket single up the middle that scored Martin, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.  Blake eventually made it 2-0 Yellowjackets when she came home on a Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) fielder's choice.

The Yellowjackets tacked on another run in the third inning when Martin hit a ground rule double and advanced to third base on a Blake sacrifice bunt.  Niemela brought home Martin on a sacrifice fly to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0.

The fourth inning saw the Yellowjackets produce a run as well when Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) walked and Summer Lindelien (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount High School) reached on an error to put runners on the corners.  This is where they executed a double-steal, scoring Linzmeier to make the score 4-0.

Martin led the way for another run in the fifth inning when she bunted for a base hit and advanced to second base on a Blake groundout.  After advancing to third base on a Niemela groundout, Martin came around to score on a Haider single to make the score 5-0.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) recorded the complete game shutout for the Yellowjackets.  She gave up two hits while striking out four batters.
