Two emotional wins for the Yellowjackets

Ashley Martin

Yellowjackets 3, Hamilton College 2
Box Score

In a game where each team can only produce four hits, it's anyone's game to win.  The team that plays bigger at the end of the game usually prevails, even if it takes longer.  Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) was the Yellowjacket coming through in crunch time with a game-winning RBI-single in the tenth inning to lift the Yellowjackets to a 3-2 victory.

Hamilton set the tone in the first inning when Lisa Faraci reached on an error and advanced to second base on a Jenn Rougeux sacrifice bunt.  This set up an RBI-single by Melissa Kaknis to give Hamilton a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets responded in the third inning when Linzmeier walked and advanced to second on a Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) sacrifice bunt.  Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) would follow that with a bunt single.  Linzmeier scored on the play due to a bad throw to tie the game at a run a piece.

It would take both teams until the eighth inning to produce offense as each team traded runs.  With the international rule of tie break in effect, both teams used it to their advantage.  Hamilton struck first when Rougeux slapped a rocket single to left field that scored Sarah Moore from second base to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead.  The Yellowjackets tied the game at two runs a piece when Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) came home from second base when Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) reached on an error.

Linzmeier stepped up for the Yellowjackets  in the 9th inning with an RBI single up the middle that scored Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta) to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 walk-off win.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) tossed the first eight innings and gave up two runs (none earned) on four hits before giving way to Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School), who picked up the win pitching the 9th and 10th inning.

Yellowjackets 4, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 2
Box Score

This time, it was Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) providing a spark early in the contest for the Yellowjackets.  This shifted the momentum in favor of the Yellowjackets as they never looked back en route to a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Martin led the first inning off with an infield single while Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) followed that with a walk.  This got Brugman licking her chops as she came through on a 2-RBI double to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.

The Corsairs cut that lead in half in the bottom half of the inning when Samantha Gregoire reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on the throw.  This plated Rachel Carey, who drove Gregiore in with a single to left field to make the score 2-1.

Summer Lindelien (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount High School) responded for the Yellowjackets in the second inning with a rocket single to right field and advanced to second on a Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) pinch hit bunt single.  Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) stepped up with an RBI-single that scored Lindelien to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1.

The Yellowjackets added another run on a double steal that scored Linzmeier from third base to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 4-1.  The Corsairs were only able to answer with one more run in the third inning when Jenna Sylvia led off with a single and came around to score when Gregiore reached on an error and advanced on a bad throw to make the score 4-2.

Le Bard hucked a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out five.

The Yellowjackets (4-7, 0-0 WIAC) will return to action tomorrow in Fort Myers, Fla.  They will square off against Nichols College at 11:00 a.m. and North Central College at 1:00 p.m.
