Yellowjackets dominate Bison, fall to Cardinals

Yellowjackets 7, Nichols College 0
Box Score

From the first pitch to last pitch, the Yellowjackets controlled every aspect of the game.  Hitting, pitching, and fielding was solid for them throughout the contest as they cruised past Nichols College 7-0.

The Yellowjackets wasted no time producing offense when Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) led off the game with a walk followed by a Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) bunt single.  This set up a Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) two-RBI double to the left field fence to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.

Martin chipped in another run for the Yellowjackets in the second inning when she bunted for a base hit, putting her on first base for Blake.  Blake also laid down a bunt single, this sent Martin around the bases and gave the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.

A huge four run fourth inning for the Yellowjackets sealed the Bison's fate.  Kelly Carlson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet High School) led the inning off with a single up the middle, followed by a Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) sacrifice bunt that turned out to be an error.  This put runners on the pond for Martin, who hit a laser double to left field that scored Carlson to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 4-0.  After a Blake bunt single, Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) drove in Fjeran on a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 5-0.  That play moved Martin to third base, who eventually scored on a wild pitch to make things 6-0.  The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring when Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) hit a groundball that was mishandled by the Bison third baseman, which brought home Blake to make the score 7-0.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) was the winning pitcher; she surrendered only one hit while striking out five batters.

North Central College 6, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

Shutouts seem to be a trend for the Yellowjackets.  This is the sixth contest in this young season that the Yellowjackets have either been on the right or wrong end of a shutout.  On this given game, they were on the end that isn't ideal as they fell to North Central College 6-0.

The second inning stung the Yellowjackets as they gave up four runs on five hits.  Amanda Walker led off with a single to left field followed by a Kiersten Tinkoff double up the middle.  Andrea Starr cleaned up the base pads with a rocket double to right field to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.  Carly Trenhaile singled during the next at bat to move Starr up to third base, who eventually scored on a Cecie Portillo sacrifice fly to extend the Cardinal lead to 3-0.   Trenhaile later came around to score on a Taylor Ryan single to right field to make things 4-0.

The Cardinals closed out the scoring in the fifth inning with a pair of runs.  Starr once again came through in the clutch for North Central with a two-RBI bases loaded single down the left field line to make the score 6-0.

Gross and Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) platooned on the rubber for the Yellowjackets throughout the game.  Gross was tagged with the loss as she pitched 3 ½ innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one batter.

The Yellowjackets (5-8, 0-0 WIAC) will return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 21st) in Fort Myers, Fla.  They will square off against SUNY-Brockport at 9:00 a.m. and Smith College at 11:00 a.m
