Yellowjackets sweep, win five of last six

Yellowjackets 5, SUNY-Brockport 3
Box Score

Somebody had to play the role of hero for the Yellowjackets in order to prevail over the Golden Eagles from Brockport.  Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) answered the bell in the sixth inning with a game tying RBI-double.  The women in yellow and black didn't look back after that moment as they cruised to a 5-3 victory.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the opening inning when Brianna Ferchen and Jenna Yates led off with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third base on a bad Yellowjacket throw.  Ferchen came around to score on a Sarah Rosenbarker ground out to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) responded for the Yellowjackets in the third inning when she laid down a bunt single.  This set up a Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) RBI-single up the middle to tie the game at a run a piece.

Erika Lazzaro broke the tie for the Golden Eagles in the fourth inning when she blasted a solo-home run to left field to give them a 2-1 lead.  This was enough fuel the Yellowjackets needed to push them over the edge.

The Yellowjackets tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning when Thomfohrda lasered a double to left field that scored Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) from second base.  The stellar play continued for the Yellowjackets as they tallied three runs in the seventh inning.

Blake set the tone when she hit an infield single and came around to score on a Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) double to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead.  Linzmeier cleaned up Niemela with a triple to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 4-2.  The Yellowjackets made it 5-2 when Linzmeier came home on a double steal.

The Golden Eagles only responded with one run in the 7th inning when Brianna Harris scored on a Yates sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) got the pitching win for the Yellowjackets, she gave up three runs on seven hits in the complete game effort.

Yellowjackets 3, Smith College 0
Box Score

It seemed as if head coach Roger Plachta used a different formula and played some of the younger players for experience.  That formula turned out to be a success for the Yellowjackets as they defeated Smith College 3-0.  With this victory, the Yellowjackets won five of their last six games.

Most of the offensive production occurred in the second inning for the Yellowjackets as they were able to pound out a pair of runs.  Martin led off the inning with an infield single and moved to third base when Blake reached first base on an error.  This is where a double steal was perfectly executed, scoring Martin from third base to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.  After stealing third, Blake came home on a Niemela sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0 Yellowjackets.

Another run was tacked on for the Yellowjackets in the third inning when Martin and Blake led off with back-to-back bunt singles and moved to second and third base on a Lindsay Garay (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern High School) sacrifice bunt.  Niemela posted her second RBI of the contest when she knocked Martin home on a groundout to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 3-0.

Amanda Le Bard (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) pitched a complete game shutout for the Yellowjackets.  She allowed three hits while striking out five batters.

The Yellowjackets (7-8, 0-0 WIAC) will wrap up their spring trip in Fort Myers, Fla. tomorrow (Mar. 22nd).  They will take on UW-Oshkosh at 9:00 a.m. and Knox College at 11:00 a.m.
