The Yellowjacket baseball team opened the 2013 season under the teflon sky of the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn., playing a doubleheader against Augsburg College, located just a hop, skip and a jump away from the venerable stadium.

And it was the Auggies who enjoyed the indoor confines on the heels of the area's latest winter storm, jumping on the Yellowjackets quickly and sweeping both ends of the Wednesday doubleheader.

Game 1
Augsburg 7, Yellowjackets 2
Box Score

Augsburg got the scoring started early in the first game, knocking around Yellowjacket starter Travis Elwood (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) for five runs on five hits in the first. Ryan Sward doubled to left scoring the first two runs of the game before a single out was recorded. Two hitters later Gordon Kappers singled home two more and the Yellowjackets were down 5-0 before their first at bat.

Jeff Miller (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) singled in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Yellowjackets their first hit of the day and put runners on the corners with nobody out. Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) followed with a single to score Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and get the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard.

The Auggies got the run back in the top of the fifth as they scored twice to stretch the lead to 7-1. In the bottom half of the fifth the Yellowjackets would get their final run of the game.

Shawn Lanners (Buckman, Minn./Royalton) singled down the left field line to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before being lifted for pinch runner Weston Smith (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt). Two hitters later Soderquist singled through the left side to score Smith and make the final score 7-2.

Soderquist was the offensive leader for the Yellowjackets, going 2-for-3 and driving in a run. The Yellowjackets as a team managed just six hits.

Elwood took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked three and struck out two in three innings. Freshman Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) pitched the final three innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.

Kappers, Sward, Louie LaChapelle and Zach Pavlisick all had two hits each and all but LaChapelle had two RBI to lead Augsburg.

Tyler Beck was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on two hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Game 2
Augsburg 5, Yellowjackets 1
Box Score

The second game of the day started off as a pitcher's duel, as Augsburg's Tyler Flanke and the Yellowjackets' Dan Genrich (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) traded scoreless innings through three, with each team scratching out just one hit. That all changed in the top of the fourth inning when the Yellowjackets took the lead.

With two outs, Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) singled and went to third on a Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) single before scoring on a base hit by Tyler Duex (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) to make it 1-0. Unfortunately the Yellowjackets were done scoring and Augsburg was just about to begin.

Genrich walked back-to-back hitters, followed by a bunt single and had the bases loaded behind him with one out. After getting the second out, Gary Mariscal doubled, scoring two and giving the Auggies a 2-1 lead while putting an end to the day for Genrich, who was relieved by Cody Johnson (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna). Johnson would surrender two more runs and it was a 4-1 Auggie lead after four.

In the bottom of the fifth Abe Welckle singled up the middle to score the final run of the game, making it 5-1 in favor of Augsburg.

Remund led the Yellowjackets in the second game, knocking out two of the team's five hits.

Genrich ended up taking the loss, being tagged with four earned runs on just three hits in 3.2 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Welckle and Mariscal each had two hits, while Mariscal and Billy Brookshaw each drove in two runs for Augsburg (3-1).

Flanke was the winning pitcher, giving up one run on four hits in four innings. Chris Bambenek pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.

The Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 WIAC) return to action on Thursday, March 14 when they will play a Metrodome doubleheader against St. John's University of Collegeville, Minn. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
