Warhawks Take a Pair of Games Away from Yellowjackets

UW-Whitewater 8, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

Mother nature around the state of Wisconsin forced the Yellowjackets to take a trip to Platteville for a second consecutive weekend.  Things turned out the same on the field for the Yellowjackets; a lack of offense, one big inning for the opposition, and another 8-0 loss in the record book.

It took the Warhawks until the fourth inning to get any type of offense brewing.  With two outs, Joanne Jablonski hit an infield single followed by a Paige Evangelista walk to put runners on first and second base.  Kelly McGrail prevailed with an RBI-single to left field that scored Jablonski to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.

Another late inning let down doomed the Yellowjackets.  They would surrender seven runs in the fifth inning.  Mimi Ramirez and Morgan Krisch led off with back-to-back singles.  After advancing a base on a Yellowjacket passed ball, Ramirez scored on a throwing error to extend the Warhawk lead to 2-0.  Samie Seamon later reached on a Yellowjacket error that put runners on the corners for Laura Eichenold, who lasered a two-run single up the middle to make the score 4-0.  After a Jablonski walk, the Warhawks prevailed once again with runners on the pond when Evangelista smacked an RBI single to left field to widen the Warhawk lead to 5-0.  Kelly McGrail followed that with a walk to load the bases for Ramirez, who drove in Jablonski on an infield hit to make the score 6-0.  Megan Smith put the finishing touches on the game with a two-run double to the left-center field gap, scoring McGrail and Evangelista to make the score 8-0.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) took the pitching loss for the Yellowjackets, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Box Score

Home runs were the story in game two between the Yellowjackets and Warhawks.  However, the two round-trippers hit by Gross and Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) was the only offense the Yellowjackets could generate as they fell by a score of 3-2.

The Warhawks struck first in the second inning when Seamon blasted a home run to left field to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets responded right away in the third inning when Gross hit a home run of her own to tie the game at a run a piece.

The third inning proved to put the Warhawks over the edge, coming up with two runs.  McGrail led off with a single and came all the way around to score on a Sarah Fisher single to give the Warhawks a 2-1 lead.  That lead was soon 3-1 when Krisch smacked a double to center field that scored Fisher.

Ashley Martin (Superior, Wis./Superior High School) pulled the Yellowjackets within a run when she blasted a home run to left field to make the score 3-2.  Unfortunately, that's all the Yellowjackets were able to muster.

Gross took the loss for the Yellowjackets on the rubber.  She gave up three runs on nine hits in the complete game effort.

The Yellowjackets (9-14, 0-6 WIAC) will look to continue their search for a WIAC victory tomorrow when they face UW-Oshkosh in Platteville.  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
