Baseball, softball schedule changes

With Old Man Winter refusing to lessen his grip on the state of Wisconsin as we enter the month of April, baseball and softball teams from around the state are being forced to adjust their schedules as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and its members enter conference play. As a result, both the Yellowjacket baseball and softball teams have been forced to make changes to their respective schedules for the coming weekend.

The baseball team was originally scheduled to play doubleheaders at UW-Whitewater on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. That plan has been changed. Instead, the Yellowjackets and the Warhawks will play single games on Friday, April 5 (6:00 p.m.) and Saturday, April 6 (4:00 p.m.). The originally scheduled doubleheader for Sunday, April 7 remains unchanged.

UW-Whitewater's field is in good playing condition, and as a result, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Platteville have moved their four-game series to be played at Whitewater as well.

On the softball side the Yellowjackets were scheduled to play a doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, April 6 and two games at UW-Eau Claire on Sunday, April 7. All four games will still be played (weather pending), but the games have split up between the two days. The Yellowjackets, who will be the visitors in all four games, will UW-Eau Claire at 11:00 a.m. and UW-Stevens Point at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday they will play UW-Stevens Point at 9:00 a.m. and UW-Eau Claire at 1:00 p.m.

"That's the nature of spring sports in the northern part of the country. A few years back we were playing on our home fields in March because the winter was mild and we had a quick snow melt and thaw. Now this year, we're into April and there is enough snow on the fields to make us have to move games all over the place," athletics director Steve Nelson said. "We're used to it. There isn't anything we can do about it so we'll do what we need to do to get our games in.

"By making the adjustments we did today, it allows the conference to keep its opening weekend scheduled and keeps us on track to play the conference tournaments on time."

Stay tuned for more schedule changes throughout the spring.
