Pointers and Blugolds Blank Yellowjackets

UW-Stevens Point 8, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

The offensive struggles continued for the Yellowjackets as UW-Stevens Point pitcher Michelle Jones mowed them down on her way to a perfect game.  In addition to not allowing a base runner, she struck out five batters.  The Pointer offense helped Jones out, pounding out 11 hits on their way to an 8-0 shutout.

The Pointers came out of the gates in the first inning when Sam Raddant bunted for a base hit.  After stealing second base, she came around to score on a Alicia Hahnemann double to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead.  Hahnemann advanced to third base on a Paige Meulemans single before scoring on a failed double steal attempt.  Despite the fact Meulemans was caught stealing, the Pointers made the score 2-0.  Katie Schulfer added to the offense with a double to put a runner on base for Jordan Schreiner, who came through with an RBI-single to make the score 3-0.

Raddant made the score 4-0 when she blasted a solo-home run over the left field fence in the second inning.

The Pointers chipped in with another run in the third inning when Meulemans reached on a botched play by the Yellowjackets.  Shulfer and Katie Krueger loaded the bases with a single and walk respectively for Bekah Rennicke, who drove in Meulemans on a fielder's choice to make the score 5-0.

The fourth inning saw the Pointers add three more runs.  Hahemann, Raddant produced back-to-back singles before Meulemans intentionally walked to load the bases.  Shulfer came up big with an RBI-single that scored Hahemann to extend the Pointer lead to 6-0.  Schreiner followed that up with another RBI-single to make the score 7-0.  The Pointers closed out the scoring when Krueger hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 8-0.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) took the pitching loss.  She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eleven hits while walking a pair and striking out one on 3 1/3 innings of work.

UW-Eau Claire 8, Yellowjackets 0
Box Score

The bats didn't come alive much more for the Yellowjackets as they were only able to scatter three hits.  However, it was a big seven run fourth inning for the Blugolds that doomed the Yellowjackets in a 8-0 loss.

Amanda Fischer was pesky for the Yellowjackets in the second inning when she led off with a walk.  After stealing second base and advancing to third base on a Nikki Brooks sacrifice bunt, she scored on a passed ball to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead.

The fourth inning saw the Blugolds tack on seven runs.  Casey Arnold led off with a double before Amanda Fischer hit a two-run home run to extend the Blugold lead to 3-0.  Taylor Pierce followed that up with a single up the middle.  She would score on a Amanda Houle ground rule double to make the score 4-0.  Jenny Hess then bunted for a base hit to put runners on the corners.  This set up a double steal, scoring Houle from third base to extend the Blugold lead to 5-0.  After Sarah Fern walked, the Blugolds scored on another double steal, this time it was Hess to make the score 6-0.  Arnold would clean things up with a two-run home run to make the score 8-0.

Gross took the loss on the rubber for the Yellowjackets.  In four innings of work, she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.

The Yellowjackets (9-12, 0-4 WIAC) will return to action on Saturday (Apr. 13th) where they will travel to UW-Whitewater.  First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
