Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Northland 0

For the second time this season the Yellowjacket volleyball team made quick work of Northland College, as they took down the Lumberjills by a 3-0 score on Wednesday night in a match that lasted less than an hour on Northland's home court.

With the win, the Yellowjackets snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Yellowjackets dominated play, leading in all categories, including attack percentage, where the team posted a season-best .434, compared to a dismal .048 for Northland.

In the opening set the Yellowjackets started fast, winning four of the first five points on their way to blowing the set open and taking a 10-3 lead. The Lumberjills came roaring back and closed to within two points, shaving the Yellowjacket lead to 15-13. But kills from Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) and Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) helped close the set, as the Yellowjackets won 10 of the last 14 points en route to a 25-17 win.

The second set was all Yellowjackets. They opened up a fast lead, winning seven of the first eight points. After giving a point back, Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River) came up with the kill and then served the Yellowjackets to six straight points as they pulled away. In the end the Yellowjackets allowed a season low five points and took the second frame 25-5.

With a two-set lead the Yellowjackets wasted little time closing things out in the third set. They scored in bunches, having six runs of at least three points and cruised to a 25-13 victory. McKenzie Kanipes (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and Deadrick had strong sets, serving the Yellowjackets to five and four points, respectively.

Vonasek was the lone Yellowjacket to reach double digits in kills, finishing the match with 12. Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) was next with eight kills, followed by Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) and Deadrick who each had four. Vonasek and Tynen were both perfect on the attack and finished with attack percentages of .667 and .400. As a team the Yellowjackets committed just three errors on the attack.

Deadrick had a match-best 22 assists, while Mikayla Bock (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna) added eight. Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River) had four service aces, while Bock added three.

On defense Deadrick, Tynen and Peterson tied for the team lead with eight digs, while Vonasek had three blocks.

The Yellowjackets (11-5, 0-3 WIAC) return home on Friday when they will host a triangle event at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Yellowjackets will host Lakehead University of Thunder Bay at 4:00 p.m. When the match is finished Lakehead will take on Finlandia. The Yellowjackets will then take on Finlandia in the final match of the day.
