Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Crown 0

The 2013 season has been a long one for the Crown College Storm, who picked up their first win of the season on Friday night against Northland. The Yellowjackets were responsible for one of Crown's defeats, blowing away the Storm two weeks ago at the St. Kate's Invite. On Saturday, the Storm had already played two matches by the time they took the court at Mertz Mortorelli Gym, and the Yellowjackets made sure that the third contest of the day was short-lived.

The Yellowjackets opened up a big lead early in the first set and never looked back in a 3-0 sweep of the Storm, with scores of 25-12, 25-11, and 25-11. The match, the fourth straight victory for the Yellowjackets (including Friday's exhibition win over Lakehead) was over in just 40 minutes.

A kill by Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) opened the match and the Yellowjackets rolled to a 4-0 lead. Crown clawed its way back to within a point at 8-7 before the Yellowjackets blew the set open. Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) stopped the bleeding with a kill and then later served the Yellowjackets to four straight points as the Yellowjackets opened up a 16-8 lead. Kills by Jessica Dvergsten (Greenbush, Minn./Greenbush-Middle River), Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River), and Alissa Autio (Floodwood, Minn./) helped the Yellowjackets close out the first set victory.

The second set was tight early, tied at 4-4 before an Autio kill gave the Yellowjackets the lead and brought Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) to the service line. Walerius proceeded to serve the Yellowjackets to nine straight points, with kills coming from Autio, Zimmerman, Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko), Peterson, and Brooke Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) to extend the lead. Four points later Peterson went on a service tear to build the lead to 21-7. Autio came through with a kill on the final point of the set to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set got off to another tight start and the Storm actually had a 5-3 lead at one point. But the Yellowjackets were just too much and vaulted into the lead. And again it came while Walerius was serving. Down a point, Walerius served the Yellowjackets to a four point-point lead. Peterson again followed with five service points of her own to give the Yellowjackets an 18-9 lead. With a ten point lead at 21-11, the Yellowjackets closed the match out on the service of Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti). Landherr served the final four points and got kills from Zimmerman, Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and McKenzie Kanipes (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) to close the match out.

The Yellowjackets had 39 kills and an attack percentage of .425 on the afternoon. Zimmerman led the way with nine kills while Tynen added seven. Deadrick had 32 of the 39 assists in the match for the Yellowjackets. Walerius had four service aces and six digs, which were bettered only by Peterson who had 11. Deadrick contributed four blocks while Kanipes had three in the match.

The Yellowjackets (13-5, 0-3) return to WIAC play next week beginning with a match against UW-Stout on Wednesday, October 2. Game time at Mertz Mortorelli Gym is 7:00 p.m.
