Big third period lifts Yellowjackets

Box Score

Yellowjackets 6, UW-Stout 1

Through the first 15 games of the 2013-14 season, the third period was the lowest scoring period for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team, as they tallied just eight times in the frame on the year. On Friday night they flipped that script on its ear.

The Yellowjackets scored four times in a span of 5 minutes 39 seconds to cruise to a 6-1 win over UW-Stout in their first game at Wessman Arena in eight weeks.

It was a big offensive night for several players who had been absent from the score sheet in recent weeks. Michael Rey (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Garden City Collegiate) led the way with a pair of goals, including the game winner and also added an assist. Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) snapped a six-game goal-less streak and also had a pair of assists, and Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) who had just one point in his last nine games had four assists.

The Yellowjackets opened the scoring early when Marc Fortin (Pottageville, Ontario/King City Secondary) snapped up a rebound of a shot by Shand and slid it past Stout goaltender Corey Koop to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead at 4:51. It was the first goal of the year for Fortin.

Stout tied the score late in the first period when Shayne McLaughlin fired a slap shot from the right point off of a face-off that was deflected by Joey Haydcock past Yellowjacket goaltender Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I) to tie the game at 16:38 of the first.

In the second the Blue Devils enjoyed a territorial advantage over the Yellowjackets but were unable to forge ahead. Their best chance came when Tyler Cayemberg was sprung on a breakaway, but after faking from backhand-to-forehand his shot only found the glove of Strandberg and the score remained tied.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good late in the second. On their first power play of the night, Dalbec got the puck behind the Stout goal and fed a pass to Rey in the left circle. His initial shot was stopped by Koop, but he got his own rebound and, with 10.7 seconds left in the frame, lifted a backhand home for his sixth of the season to make it 2-1 after two periods.

Rey gave the Yellowjackets some insurance at 8:03 of the third period when he grabbed a rebound to the left of the goal off of a shot by Shand and lifted it over the right shoulder of Koop to give the Yellowjackets a two-goal edge. Just 8:27 later the Yellowjackets moved ahead by three goals on the power play. Connor Faupel (Rochester, Minn./Century), playing for the first time since early November, let a shot go from the high slot that beat Koop for his first of the year and it was 4-1 at 10:30 of the period. Shand and Fortin assisted.

Seconds after the goal the Yellowjackets went shorthanded and they picked up their second shorthanded goal of the year. Shand broke up a play in the Yellowjacket zone and moved the puck ahead to Rey on the left wing. Rey then slid a perfect pass across the slot to Dalbec who was driving the net and he poked home his sixth goal of the year, his first since the Yellowjackets defeated Norwich on November 30 to make it a 5-1 game and invoke the Culver's 5-Goal Free-For-All - where everyone in attendance gets a free scoop of custard from Culver's in Superior. Dalbec's goal came at 11:10 of the third.

Dalbec's goal also chased Koop from the net, as he was replaced by Eric Wobschall. Unfortunately for Stout, Wobschall didn't fare much better.

A little more than two minutes after the goaltending change the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring. Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) wired a shot from the right side that was stopped by Wobschall, but Jordan Shockley (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School), who hadn't scored since the fourth game of the season, picked up the rebound and scored his third of the year at 13:42 to make the final score 6-1. Brad Phenow (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) also had an assist on the play.

Strandberg had another strong outing for the Yellowjackets, finishing the night with 24 saves. His record improves to 4-3-2. At the other end, Koop and Wobschall combined to make 36 saves.

Each team took four penalties for eight minutes in the game. The Yellowjackets went 2-for-3 on the power play and were a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The two teams will meet in the second game of the series on Saturday, with the Yellowjackets (6-8-2, 1-1-1 WIAC) looking to pick up their first weekend sweep of the season.
