Softball drops season opener

Bemidji State 5, Yellowjackets 2

Despite winter weather that makes you think spring will never arrive, spring sports were a focus on Tuesday as the Yellowjacket softball squad opened its season in the Twin Cities taking on Division II Bemidji State University.

The Yellowjackets knocked out six hits and hit a pair of home runs, but that was the extent of the offense and the Beavers, who were playing their third game of the year earned the 5-2 victory.

Bemidji jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the top of both the first and third innings. The Yellowjackets were able to saw that lead in half in the bottom of the third when Melissa Clark (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) connected for a solo home run with two outs in the inning to make it a 2-1 game.

The game stayed close until the top of the seventh when the Beavers scored three times. The big blow was a one-out double by Megan Boser that scored two runs to push the lead to 4-1. Boser then scored later in the inning make the score 5-1.

In the bottom of the seventh the Yellowjackets did muster a second run, and again it came via the home run. This time it was Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) going deep for her first of the year to cut the lead to 5-2. Bemidji retired the next three hitters in order to close out the game.

Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) and Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) each went 2-for-3 for the Yellowjackets, who were outhit 15-6 in the game.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) got the start and took the loss for the Yellowjackets, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing all five runs (four earned) on 15 hits. She walked three and struck out five. Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) came on in relief and recorded the final out.

Angie Roberts and Nicole Dupay each had three hits to pace the offense for the Beavers.

The Yellowjackets (0-1, 0-0 WIAC) will have three games on Wednesday. They will take on Carleton College at 9:00 a.m. and Valley City State at 11:00 a.m. before getting a rematch with the Beavers at 1:00 p.m.
