A day after dropping its season opener to Bemidji State, the Yellowjacket softball team kicked its season into high gear, playing three games on Wednesday in the West St. Paul Dome in the Twin Cities. The Yellowjackets dropped decisions to Carleton College of Northfield, Minn. and Valley City State University of Valley City, North Dakota before earning their first win of the year in a rematch with Bemidji State.

Carleton 8, Yellowjackets 1

Carleton jumped on the Yellowjackets early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Keelin Davis started the scoring with a two-run single and Micaela Rose added a run-scoring single later in the inning to put the Knights in front. They would add two more runs in the top of the third on a double by Holly Buttrey.

Down five the Yellowjackets broke through in the bottom of the third inning, plating their only run of the game. For the second day in a row the offense came off the bat of Melissa Clark (Carlton, Minn./Carlton), who hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot off Davis to make the score 5-1.

The Knights closed out the scoring in the top half of the sixth inning. Kaitlin Bagley drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Davis had her second two-run single of the game, scoring two on a base hit to right field to make the final score 8-1.

Carleton out-hit the Yellowjackets 13-4 in the game. In addition to Clark's home run, Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) had two hits and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) had one.

Haley McNeil (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) started for the Yellowjackets and gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings. Freshman Alison Wainionpaa (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) came on in relief and gave up two earned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. She had three strikeouts. Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) finished the game, allowing one run on two hits in 1.2 innings.

The Yellowjackets pulled to within one at 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Vikings answered, with a run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fith. Each team scored twice in the sixth inning to make the final score 8-4.

The Yellowjackets were led by Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), who went 3-for-4. Haider had two hits for the second game in a row. The pair accounted for all five hits the Yellowjackets had in the game. Haider also had two RBI.

Yellowjackets 2, Bemidji State 1

The final game of the day was a rematch of the season opener as the Yellowjackets took on Bemidji State and they scratched out their first win of the 2014 campaign.

All of the offense for the Yellowjackets came in the bottom of the first inning. Wilke readched on an error to lead off the inning and Haider followed with a single. McNeil sacrificed both runners into scoring position and Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) brought them home, finding some green in the outfield with a single to put the Yellowjackets ahead 2-0.

Bemidji got its lone run in the top of the fifth when Cassie MacArthur tripled, scoring Mikayla Osterman.
