Yellowjackets sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After going 1-3 in four games at the dome in West St. Paul, Minn. earlier in the week, the Yellowjacket softball team headed north for the Finlandia Dome Tournament. The Lions annually host the event at the Superior Dome in Marquette, Mich. And after one day of competition, the Yellowjackets sit 2-0 and have evened their record for the season.

Yellowjackets 7, Edgewood 0

It was all Yellowjackets in the opener as they blanked Edgewood College out of Madison.

In the top of the second inning the Yellowjackets broke the game open, scoring four times. Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on a Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) double to make it 1-0. Fjeran later scored on an error. Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) added another run on a ground out and then Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) scored on a Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) single to make it 4-0.

Anna Morgan (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) made it a 5-0 game in the bottom of the fourth inning when she hit a solo home run, her first of the season. Morgan drove in another run with a single in the top of the six, plating Fjeran who doubled to lead off the inning. Later, a Wilke ground out brought home Morgan to push the lead to 7-0.

The Yellowjackets had nine hits in the game - Wilke, Morgan, Fjeran and Nelson all had two hits in the game. Morgan also drove in two and scored three times.

Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) went the distance for the Yellowjackets, giving up just three hits with zero walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Yellowjackets 5, Concordia Wisconsin 4

The second game of the day presented a little tougher challenge than Saturday's opener, as the Yellowjackets rallied late to earn the win.

Both teams found plenty of offense in the first.

The Yellowjackets got a one-out solo home run from Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) to open the scoring. With two outs a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases and the Yellowjackets took advantage. This time it was Morgan, who with the help of another Falcon error drove in two to make it a 3-0 game.

In the bottom half of the inning the Falcons answered however. Three of the first four hitters singled to push a run across, and then Alyssa Robison doubled home another run and then Jennifer Reicher homered to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead after one inning.

From there the pitchers took over, shutting down the opposition offenses.

Felicia Meyer allowed just three hits to the Yellowjackets in innings two through six, while Yellowjacket starter Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) gave the Falcons just two hits over that same stretch.

The Yellowjackets found their offensive stride once again and plated a pair in the top of the seventh.

Haider led off with a single and Haley McNeil (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) sacrificed her into scoring position. Niemela followed with a triple to tie the game. Niemela was lifted for pinch runner Traci Popple (Cornell, Wis./Cornell), and after a pitching change scored the game-winning run. Taylor Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) grounded into a fielder's choice, but the Falcon infielder committed an error on the play, allowing Popple to come across and give the Yellowjackets a 5-4 lead.

Hendrickson shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, allowing a hit but facing the minimum number of hitters in the inning. Hendrickson earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. She walked no one and struck out two.

Haider led the Yellowjackets at the plate with three hits.

The Yellowjackets (3-3, 0-0 WIAC) will play two more games at the Finlandia tournament on Sunday. They will play Marian at 1:15 p.m. before squaring off against the host Lions at 3:00 p.m.
