The Yellowjacket softball team won a pair of games on Tuesday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Plain and simple, the Yellowjacket softball team is rolling. On Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla., the Yellowjackets won a pair of close games against East Coast opponents to remain unbeaten in Florida and push their winning streak to seven games.

Yellowjackets 4, Brockport State 2

Offense was at a premium in the day's first game, with both the Yellowjackets and Golden Eagles knocking out just four hits, so they Yellowjackets took advantage of all of the opportunites coming their way to earn the win.

After two scoreless innings, Brockport drew first blood, scoring their only two runs of the game in the top of the third inning.

The Yellowjackets tied it in the bottom half of the inning, getting things going before Brockport recorded an out. Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato), Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato), and Melissa Clark (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) all reached base to start the inning. With the bases full, Haley McNeil (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) reached on an error, scoring Haider with the Yellowjackets' first run. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) came up next and grounded out, scoring Niemela to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the fourth Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a fly out, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Yellowjackets their first lead of the day. They then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, and again it was due to a wild pitch. This time it was Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) coming home, to give the Yellowjackets a 4-2 advantage.

Starter Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) got stronger as the game went on and put the Golden Eagles down in order in the seventh, to preserve the win. Gross gave up just two unearned runs in seven innings, walking three and striking out three to improve her record to 7-2 on the season.

Blake, Niemela, Clark, and Linzmeier had the hits for the Yellowjackets.

Yellowjackets 3, UMASS-Dartmouth 2

The second game of the day was another tight one, with the teams combining for just ten hits and five runs.

In the top of the third inning the Yellowjackets got on the board thanks to some shoddy defense from the Corsairs. With two outs in the inning Haider struck out swinging, only to reach base on an error by the catcher. Blake came across to score on the same play, giving the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

It went to 2-0 in the fourth when Taylor Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led off with a single and scored two hitters later on a Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) double.

UMASS-Dartmouth cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Yellowjackets got that run back in the top of the sixth, and again were helped along by defensive errors. Fjeran walked with one out and after being sacrificed to second, moved to third on a wild pitch. Linzmeier then reached on an error, and Fjeran scored the two-out run to give the Yellowjackets a two-run lead.

The Corsairs weren't about to go away quietly, however, mounting a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. They pushed a run across and, with one out, put the tying run on second, only to have Yellowjacket pitcher Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) induce a game-ending double-play to secure the win.

Hendrickson pitched a complete game to pick up the win, improving to 4-2 on the season. Hendrickson allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings. She walked one and struck out five.

Five different players had one hit in the game for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (11-4) will enjoy a day off in Florida before returning to action on Thursday, March 20 when they will take on the University of New England of Portland, Maine and St. Joseph's College out of Brooklyn, N.Y.
