The Yellowjacket softball team played a pair of games on Sunday, going 1-1 to push its record to 4-4 leading into their spring trip in Fort Myers, Fla.

Yellowjackets 7, Marian 0

For the second day in a row the Yellowjackets started the day with a 7-0 whitewashing of their opponent, this time taking down Marian University. The Yellowjackets swung some big bats in the game, hitting three home runs in the first game of the day.

Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) started the scoring in the top of the first inning, connecting for a home run to lead off the game and give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead. Despite getting two more hits in the inning the Yellowjackets couldn't plate another run.

In the top of the third Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) hit a one-out homer to push the Yellowjacket lead to 2-0.

The Yellowjackets blew the game open top of the fourth when Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) and Anna Morgan (South Range, Wis./Northwestern) hit back-to-back singles with one out. Senior Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) came up next and laced a ball to the gap that went for an inside-the-park home run to push the lead to 5-0.

In the top of the seventh the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring when Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) doubled, scoring both Niemela and Haley McNeil (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) to make the final score 7-0.

Niemela had three hits and McNeil had two to pace the Yellowjackets, who outhit Marian 11-5.

Gross was in control all day, pitching a complete-game shutout. She scattered five hits over seven innings with a walk and no strikeouts. The fourth inning was the only inning where Gross had difficulty, but she closed the Sabres out, leaving the bases loaded.

Finlandia 9, Yellowjackets 7

The second game for the Yellowjackets, who entered the match on a four-game winning streak, pitted them against the tournament hosts from Finlandia University. The Yellowjackets fell behind early, and even though they rallied and tried to close the gap late, but in the end couldn't overtake the Lions.

Finlandia manufactured three runs in the top of the first inning. A walk brought home one run and Breanna Hynes drove in two with a single to give the Lions a 3-0 lead before the Yellowjackets came to bat.

In the bottom of the inning the Yellowjackets manufactured a pair of runs of their own. Niemela and Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) had back-to-back singles and McNeil and Nelson had back-to-back walks to get the Yellowjackets on the board. Later Gross hit into a fielder's choice to make it 3-2 after one.

The Lions got those two runs back in the top of the third inning. Alexis Lawley led off with a home run. Heather Grimm hit into a fielder's choice that scored two runs and push the lead to 6-2.

The Yellowjackets answered in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own. Haider led off the inning with a base hit and Niemela reached on an error. McNeil was the next hitter and she drove a pitch over the fence for a three-run home run to pull the Yellowjackets back to within one at 6-5.

Finlandia scored single runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings to open up an 8-5 lead.

For the Yellowjackets, the top of the order again did some damage in the bottom of the inning to pull them back to within one. Wilke and Haider singled, and a stolen base put both runners in scoring position. Wilke scored on a passed ball and Niemela followed with a ground out that scored Haider to cut the lead to 8-7.

The Lions closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Grimm to make it 9-7. The Yellowjackets got a runner on in the bottom of the final inning, but were unable to scratch out any further scoring.

Haider led the Yellowjackets with three hits. As a team, the Yellowjackets had seven hits.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) started for the Yellowjackets and gave up eight runs (six earned) on ten hits in six innings. She walked one and didn't strike out anyone. Gross came on and pitched the final inning.

Lawley, Hynes and India Slayback all had two hits for Finlandia.

The Yellowjackets will be back in action from sunny Florida on March 14 when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology out of Hoboken, N.J. and Franklin and Marshall College of Lancaster, Pa. The games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
