Yellowjackets complete another sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket softball team is firing on all cylinders at this point in the season. On Friday in Fort Myers, Fla., the Yellowjackets extended their winning streak to 11 games and are now sitting 11 games over the .500 mark, after taking down WIAC foe UW-Platteville and defeating Alfred State College for the second time on the trip.

Yellowjackets 4, Platteville 0

For the first time this season the Yellowjackets squared off against a team that they will see later on in the regular season, playing a game against UW-Platteville. And the Pioneers had chances, getting runners on base in every inning, but pitchers Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) and Nicolle Gross (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) pitched out of it all game and posted the shutout.

One day after tossing a no-hitter against St. Joseph's College, Hendrickson again hung all zeroes on the scoreboard, giving up seven hits over six innings with a walk and two strikeouts to earn the win. She is now 6-2 on the year. Gross came on and pitched the seventh inning.

The Yellowjackets scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Haley McNeil (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) led off the inning with a double to left center field. She went to third, and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors), who walked, went to second on a ground out. With two outs in the frame, Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) and Britnee Blake (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) each reached with bunt singles to bring both lead runners home and give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 edge.

Elle Niemela (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) led off the third inning with a single and Allie Nelson (Augusta, Wis./Augusta), pinch running for Niemela later scored on a ground out by Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo). The Yellowjackets pushed across their final run of the game in the fifth. Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) walked and was sacrificed to second. The took third and scored on an error to make the final score 4-0.

Platteville out-hit the Yellowjackets 7-4 in the game, with Blake, Linzmeier, McNeil and Niemela providing the hits for the Yellowjackets.

Yellowjackets 9, Alfred State 1

In the second game the teams played through two scoreless innings before the Yellowjackets jumped on the board with three runs in the top of the third.

Blake singled and ended up scoring on three consecutive wild pitches to get on the board. Haider walked, stole a base and went to third on a ground out. Melissa Clark (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) singled Haider home to make it 2-0. McNeil followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position and Wilke singled home a run to make it 3-0.

The Yellowjackets then put six runs on the board in the top of the sixth. Taylor Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led off with a walk and quickly stole second. Two hitters later she went to second on a ground out. Blake then brought her home with a single to make it 4-0. Haider followed with a single and after a walk to Niemela the bases were loaded. Clark reached on an error, scoring two runs to push the lead to 6-0. Another error loaded the bases and Wilke followed with a single to plate another run and stretch the lead to seven.

Mikayla Haynes (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) then pinch hit and after a passed ball scored a run knocked out a single to bring in another run and the Yellowjackets led 9-0.

Alfred State picked up their only run in the top of the fifth inning, but it was too-little-too-late and the Yellowjackets earned the win.

Gross went the distance on the rubber for the Yellowjackets, allowing the one run on just two hits in five innings to improve to 9-2 on the year. She struck out five.

At the plate the Yellowjackets had ten hits, with Blake, Haider and Wilke leading the way with two hits apiece.

The Yellowjackets (15-4) will close out their Florida trip on Saturday when they take on Knox College out of Galesburg, Ill.
