A day after splitting a pair of tight games with UW-Platteville, including a 14-inning marathon loss to start the road trip, the Yellowjacket baseball team came back to finish off the series on Friday, winning the first game with a late-inning rally and blowing out the Pioneers in the second game.

Yellowjackets 4, Platteville 2

The opening on Friday was a tight pitcher's duel, with the Yellowjackets' Travis Elwood (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) and Nathan Fay tossing zeroes through the first two innings. In the bottom of the third the Yellowjackets drew first blood. Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) led off the frame with a single up the middle and moved to second with a stolen base. The next two hitters were retired bringing Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) to the plate, and the senior sent a single up the middle, scoring Petroski to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

Platteville countered and took the lead in the top of the next inning. The first two hitters reached on singles and they were moved up with a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Zack Iverson brought both runners home, singling to left field to push the Pioneers in front 2-1.

The Yellowjackets answered in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to tie the game. For the second time in the game it was Petroski who started the rally, this time being hit by a pitch. And like in the third inning Petroski stole second to put himself in scoring position. Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) then reached base on an error, and that was enough to bring Petroski home with the tying run.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when the Yellowjackets broke the tie. Remund started the festivities, driving a double down the left field line. After Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) was intentionally walked to put two runners on, Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) broke the tie, doubling down the left field line, scoring Remund to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead. Fairbanks was thrown out trying to score on the play, allowing Holden to advance to third. He would then score on an infield single by Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa/) to make the advantage 4-2.

That was enough for Elwood. The senior righthander breezed through the ninth inning, setting the Pioneers down in order to give the Yellowjackets the win. Elwood was again his consistent self, pitching his fourth complete game of the season, giving up two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out 10 to improve to 4-1 on the year. Elwood also dropped his stellar earned run average down to 2.25 for the season.

The Yellowjackets only had seven hits in the game themselves, led by Remund who went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.

Yellowjackets 11, Platteville 1

After three tight games to open the series, the Yellowjackets blew the fourth and final game open early and cruised to the win, ending the contest via the mercy rule in the seventh inning.

The Yellowjackets got the offense rolling in the bottom of the first as Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Vold started with back-to-back singles. Remund then hit into a fielder's choice, replacing Vold on the base paths while Soderquist scampered home with the first run of the game. After stealing second, Remund came in to scoring on Holden's double and it was 2-0 Yellowjackets after one.

Platteville got a run back in the top of the second, but in the bottom half of the inning the Yellowjackets exploded, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six times to blow the game open. The Yellowjackets loaded the bases with nobody out and Soderquist grounded out to bring home the first run of the inning. Two more runs scored when Vold reached on an error, and he, along with Remund would come in to score on the big blow of the inning, a three-run home run off the bat of Fairbanks and the Yellowjacket lead was 8-1.

That was more than enough for Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan), who had little difficulty throughout the day with the Platteville lineup. Wiblin would set the Pioneers down in order in the third and fourth innings.

In the bottom of the fourth the Yellowjackets got two runners on, and with two outs, Quinones doubled to left field, scoring both and making it a 10-1 game.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-single by Vold to make the final score 11-1.

At the plate the Yellowjackets scored 11 runs on just 10 hits. They were helped along by three Platteville errors. Vold had another strong game in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two batted in. Holden also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.

Wiblin pitched the complete game, allowing just the one run on five hits to improve to 4-1 on the year. He struck out five hitters without allowing a walk.

The Yellowjackets (15-8, 7-5 WIAC) will step out of conference play and take on Macalester College of the MIAC in a doubleheader on Monday, April 21 in St. Paul, Minn. The games are slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
