During their spring trip to Arizona, the Yellowjackets, who went 8-3, had little trouble dialing up the offense when needed. That all changed on Sunday, as the Yellowjackets opened the WIAC portion of their schedule with a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh, and came up empty, losing both games to the host Titans.

Oshkosh 2, Yellowjackets 0

The conference opener for the Yellowjackets evolved into a pitcher's duel, with Oshkosh's James Lacy and the Yellowjackets' Travis Elwood (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) baffling opposing hitters throughout.

Oshkosh scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the first two hitters reached base Robbie Kleman stroked a single to left field, bringing a run home to make it 1-0. An error put two runners in scoring position with nobody out, but Elwood pitched out of trouble, retiring the final three hitters to prevent the big inning.

The Titans plated another run in the bottom of the seventh on a Neil Herbert RBI double to make it 2-0.

For the Yellowjackets, the only real offensive threats came in the first and sixth innings. With two outs Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) singled and stole second before advancing to third on a single by Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity). Both runners were stranded, however as Lacy closed out the inning. In the sixth they had two runners in scoring position with one out but again let the Titans off the hook and failed to push a run across.

Offensively the Yellowjackets had six hits, compared to five for the Titans. Tyler Evans (Andover, Minn./Andover) was the only Yellowjacket with a multi-hit game, finishing the game 2-for-4.

Elwood took the loss for the Yellowjackets, falling to 2-1 on the year. He pitched a complete game for the third time this season, scattering five hits over eight innings. He walked two and struck out nine. Only one of the two runs allowed in the game was earned.

Lacy got the win for the Titans to improve to 2-1 on the year. He gave up five hits and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work. He yielded to Ben Messenger who picked up his first save of the season.

Oshkosh 6, Yellowjackets 5

Game two saw the Yellowjackets draw first blood, as they sent three runs across in the top of the second inning.

A hit batsman, a wild pitch and a pair of walks loaded the bases with nobody out. An error brought home one run and a pair of walks scored two more and the Yellowjackets were up 3-0.

Oshkosh answered with single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to make it a one-run game.

The Yellowjackets pushed the lead to 4-2 when Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa/) blasted a pitch over the fence in left field for a solo home run, but the Titans got that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth the Yellowjackets plated a run to again establish a two-run lead. Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) singled to center field and Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and Quinones followed with walks to load the bases with nobody out. Evans drew the bases loaded walk to make the score 5-3. The potential was there for a  big inning, but the Titans ended the threat with a strikeout and a ground ball double play to keep the game close.

Oshkosh tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs.Tyler Kozlowski and Kleman did the damage, each pounding out an RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) relieved starter Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and immediately surrendered the go-ahead run, as Trey Demler homered to right field to give the Titans their first lead of the game at 6-5.

The Yellowjackets were able to get runners on in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but they were unable to plate the tying run and extend the game.

For the game the Yellowjackets had six hits, lead by Connor McLeod (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes) who had two. Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), Remund, Fairbanks and Quinones had the other hits.

Peter Jewell was the winning pitcher for the Titans, pitching the final four innings to gain the victory and improve to 2-0.

Gauger got the start for the Yellowjackets and pitched six solid innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked five and struck out two. Lewis pitched the final two innings and was tagged with the loss, falling to 1-2. The only hit he allowed in the game was the home run to Demler.

The Yellowjackets (8-5, 0-2 WIAC) and the Titans will complete their weekend series with a pair of games at Tiedemann Field on Monday, April 7. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
