The Yellowjacket baseball team was supposed to be playing at home this weekend. Would being on the home field, staying in your own bed and not eating every meal in a restaurant have been enough to propel the Yellowjackets to a few wins and potentially a berth in the WIAC post-season? Well, there is no way of knowing that. Regardless of where the Yellowjackets were taking on the WIAC champion Warhawks, it was sure to be a tough weekend. And on this one, the final of the WIAC season, the Warhawks showed why they were crowned conference champions, sweeping the Yellowjackets with two wins on Saturday and two more convincing victories on Sunday.

Whitewater 10, Yellowjackets 6

Whitewater wasted little time jumping on the Yellowjackets in the opener, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on a two-run double from Mikole Pierce.

After one inning the Yellowjackets lifted starter Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) in favor of Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan), who pitched a complete game in a losing effort against UW-Stout on Friday. Wiblin kept the Warhawks at bay until the top of the fourth when they touched him for a run to build a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Yellowjackets were finally able to break through and get on the board.

Like he did multiple times on Saturday, Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) got the rally started, singling through the left side to lead off the inning. Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Holden scored on an error to give the Yellowjackets their first run. Suguru Homma (Tsuruoka, Yamagata, Japan/Nihon University Yamagata) followed with a double that brought home Remund and Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa/) to tie the game. The deadlock was broken when Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) singled to right field, bringing home Homma to give the Yellowjackets a 4-3 lead.

Whitewater tied the game in the top of the sixth inning on a home run by Trey Cannon.

The Yellowjackets regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when a double to right field by Patko brought home Quinones and Homma to make it 6-4.

Whitewater scored single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to once again tie the score. In the top of the ninth they broke the tie with a big inning. Adam Gregory and Cannon each drove in a pair as the Warhawks put four on the board to pull ahead 10-6.

Down four in the bottom of the ninth, the Yellowjackets couldn't mount a rally, going down in order to bring the game to a close.

Homma and Patko each had three hits to lead the Yellowjackets, who had 12 hits in the game.

Wiblin was credited with the loss to fall to 4-4 on the year. He pitched eight innings and eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Whitewater 15, Yellowjackets 0

Sunday's second game was the sixth game in three days for the Yellowjackets, and the fatigue was evident as the contest was all Warhawks.

Whitewater put up six runs in the top of the first inning. Cannon and Mike Mierow did the damage, driving in two and three runs, respectively. The offense didn't let up there. The Warhawks put up two runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings before scoring three in the top of the fifth to blow the game open. In the second inning Pierce hit his second home run of the series, a two-run shot. He would add another RBI in the third inning to lead the Whitewater offense.

The Yellowjackets ended up with eight hits in the game, led by Vold and Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) who had two hits each.

Travis Elwood (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) got the start for the Yellowjackets, making his second start in three days. He lasted 2.2 innings and gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits. He walked two and struck out two and was tagged with the loss, falling to 5-3 for the season. Elwood was relieved by Christian Hall (Siren, Wis./Siren), who gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits to go along with three walks and a strikeout in 1.2 innings. Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) pitched the final 2.2 innings for the Yellowjackets and didn't give up any runs or hits. He had one strikeout.

The Yellowjackets (17-18, 8-14 WIAC) close out the WIAC portion of their 2014 schedule with these two games. Weather and field conditions permitting, the Yellowjackets could be adding games to the schedule for Thursday, May 8. Stay tuned to uwsyellowjackets.com for more information on the baseball schedule.
