Yellowjackets Overwhelm Northland

Box Score

Yellowjackets 79, Northland 55

The move to the UMAC has suited the Yellowjacket women's basketball team. They have had yet to be tested by a conference foe, and coming into Saturday were riding a three game winning streak. They looked to make that streak four, including three in a row against UMAC foes, when they faced off against Northland Saturday evening.

A hard fought game saw the Yellowjackets come out victorious to push their winning streak to four, and remain undefeated in the UMAC.

The Yellowjackets got all that they could handle from the Lumberjills to open the game, as they fell into a 15-4 deficit with 4:39 remaining in the first quarter. The Yellowjackets were able to cut the lead to eight thanks to a pair of Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) layups. Northland closed the half on a 4-0 run to push the lead back up to 12, as the Yellowjackets went into the first break trailing 22-10.

The second quarter saw the Northland lead grow to 31-16 just over two minutes in. It is at this time that the Yellowjackets finally were able to get their legs under them and chip away at the deficit. The Yellowjackets closed out the half on a 16-3 run, to go into the half trailing 36-35.

Yellowjackets pick up right where they left off in the third quarter, as they took the lead on a Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) jumper a minute into the quarter. The third quarter was by far the most dominant the Yellowjackets had, as they outscored Northland 24-4 to go into the final break with a 59-40 lead.

With the game firmly in hand, Yellowjacket coach Don Mulhern was able to evaluate for many of his reserve players in the fourth quarter, as they received significant playing time. By the time the final buzzer went off, the Yellowjackets had defeated Northland by a final score of 79-55.

Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) once again led all Yellowjacket scorers, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds. Hannah Norlin (Litchffield, Minn./Litchfield) had her best game as a Yellowjackets, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Northland was paced by Katherine Taylor, who led all scorers with 19 points off the bench. Taylor was the only Lumberjill in double figures.

The Yellowjackets overcame some early shooting woes to finish the game shooting 58.2% from the field, going 4-11 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 11-19 from the free throw line.

Northland shot 37.7% from the field, going 9-20 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 6-7 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets committed 14 turnovers. Northland committed 21.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (7-2, 3-0 UMAC) is a non-conference home match-up against Marian University. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 6:00 p.m.
