Yellowjackets Push Winning Streak to Five

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team opened up the second half of their season Tuesday night with a non-conference home matchup against Marian University. The Yellowjackets showed no signs of rust from their break, as they defeated Marian 72-61.

The Yellowjackets opened up the scoring in this match up, taking a 2-0 lead with 9:33 remaining in the first quarter on a Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) layup. Marian answered right back, hitting a 3-pointer to take a 3-2 lead. The next possession saw the Yellowjackets retake the lead for good on a Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) layup. The Yellowjackets were able to push their lead to seven points twice in the first quarter as they looked to take control of the game early. The first quarter ended with the Yellowjackets holding an 18-12 lead.

Marian came out firing in the second quarter, as they managed to cut the Yellowjacket lead to two points at 22-20 with 5:19 remaining. The Yellowjackets responded, pushing their lead back up to six at 28-22 with 3:16 remaining. It appeared as though the Yellowjackets would go into halftime with a three point lead following a Marian 3-pointer, but Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) buried a 3-pointer of her own with 0:30 remaining in the half to give the Yellowjackets a 33-27 lead.

The third quarter saw Marian fight back again, cutting the Yellowjacket lead to 37-35 with 6:05 remaining. The Yellowjackets once again responded, closing the half out on a 16-0 run to take a 53-35 lead going into the final quarter.

With the game firmly in hand, the Yellowjackets cruised through the fourth quarter to defeat the Sabres and push their winning streak to five.

The Yellowjackets were paced by Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior), who finished with 13 points. Skalmoski added 12 points and five rebounds, while Laehn chipped in eight off the bench.

Marian was led by Brandi Bender, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Lindsay Vogels and Brittany Bauman had 12 apiece for the Sabres.

The Yellowjackes shot 51.8% from the field, going 5-10 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 9-13 from the free throw line.

Marian shot 37.1% from the field, hitting 10-29 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 5-9 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets had 15 turnovers. Marian had 13.

The Yellowjackets (8-2, 3-0 UMAC) return to UMAC play Saturday, January 2 when they travel to Morris, Minn. to take on the University of Minnesota Morris. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
