Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

It may still be February, but the Yellowjacket softball team hit the field, or more appropriately the turf Saturday, opening the season with a pair of games at the Superior Dome Tournament, hosted by Finlandia University, in Marquette, Michigan on the campus of Northern Michigan University.

Simpson 11, Yellowjackets 2

The Yellowjackets were designated the home team in the first game of the day, and fell behind early when Tori Haag led off the game with a home run to give Simpson a 1-0 lead. The Yellowjackets answered in the bottom half of the inning when senior Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) clocked a two-run homer to push the Yellowjackets ahead 2-1. Simpson answered with another solo home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game on a Abby Van Vleet home run.

Simpson took the lead for good when the top of the order produced three runs in the top of the third. Simpson then got a pair of solo homers in the fourth inning, including the second of the game for Haag to blow the game open. Simpson then hit two more home runs in the top of the fifth, accounting for four runs and closing out the scoring for the game.

Haag, Van Vleet, and Rachel Guessford each had two hits and three runs batted in for Simpson.

Haider and Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) each had one hit for the Yellowjackets in the game.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) was the starting pitcher for the Yellowjackets, going four-plus innings and giving up 10 earned runs on 10 hits. She didn't walk a batter and had two strikeouts. Nicole Weigman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) pitched the final inning and gave up a run on one hit. She issued two walks and had two strikeouts.

Yellowjackets 6, Finlandia 2

In the second game of the day the Yellowjackets took on the hosts from Finlandia. For the second time on the day they were the home team, and for the second time they scored twice in their first time at bat.

Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led off the inning with a walk and stole second before coming around to score on a double by Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.). Shipman sacrificed to third and then came around to score on a groundout by Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton), and the Yellowjackets were up 2-0 after one inning.

The Yellowjackets stretched the lead in the bottom of the third. For the second time in the game, Wilke walked to lead off the inning and stole second. Two hitters later Haider reached on an error and advanced to second, with Wilke scoring on the play. Nelson reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and the Yellowjackets executed a perfect double-steal to score another run and lead 4-0 after three.

Haider hit a solo home run in the fifth, then plated Shipman on a single in the sixth to give the Yellowjackets a 6-0 lead.

FInlandia scored twice in the top of the seventh to make the final score 6-2.

Haider paced the Yellowjacket offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three runs batted in. The Yellowjackets had five hits in the game.

Hendrickson rebounded and got the win, pitching a complete game. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. She didn't walk a batter and had six strikeouts.

The Yellowjackets (1-1, 0-0 WIAC) will play two more games at the Superior Dome Tournament Sunday, taking on Lakeland College and Edgewood College.
