Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The calendar flipped to March Sunday and the Yellowjacket softball team played its second doubleheader of the season, competing in the Superior Dome Tournament in Marquette, Michigan. The tournament is hosted by Finlandia University.

Lakeland 7, Yellowjackets 6

In the first game of the day for the Yellowjackets, they dropped a tough one-run game to Lakeland College.

After falling behind in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Lakeland's Ashley Hough, the Yellowjackets rebounded, manufacturing three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) led off the inning with a walk and Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Both runners moved up a base, with Nelson scoring, on a passed ball. Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2. The Yellowjackets took the lead later in the inning when Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) scored on a Whiteney Brugman ground out to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead.

Lakeland tied the game in the bottom of the inning and the game stayed that way until the fifth when the Yellowjackets broke the tie. With one out Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) connected, driving a home run over the fence in center field for her third round-tripper of the year and the Yellowjackets were up one. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth when Thomfohrda scored on a Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) single and Wilke scored later on a passed ball.

The Yellowjacket lead was cut to two at 6-4 when Jocelyn Yeager homered in the bottom of the sixth for Lakeland. Then in the bottom of the seventh Lakeland put a dagger in the Yellowjackets. With two on and two out, Hailey Jester took a Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) pitch over the fence in left field, providing the offense to give Lakeland a 7-6 victory.

The Yellowjackets had eight hits on the day, led by Nelson who went 2-for-3.

Nicole Weigman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) got the start and pitched just two-thirds of an inning for the Yellowjackets before yielding to Hendrickson, who gave up five earned runs on 12 hits in six innings. She struck out four.

Yellowjackets 10, Edgewood 0

In the second game of the day the Yellowjackets only scored in three innings, but they made them count, putting a crooked number on the board in each and ending the game in six innings.

The Yellowjackets scratched out the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Two hitters later Wilke drove a pitch to the gap in right center, plating two, and giving the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning Weigman doubled to lead off the inning and then went to third on a Wilke ground out. Misco followed with a single to score Weigman and make the score 4-0. Misco then scored on a Haider triple. Nelson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Haider and push the Yellowjacket lead to 6-0.

The Yellowjackets put the game away in the sixth, scoring four times with two outs in the inning. Misco doubled home Fjeran and Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) to give the Yellowjackets an 8-0 lead. Haider then followed with a double, scoring two more runs, to make the final score 10-0 Yellowjackets.

For the game the Yellowjackets had eight hits, led by Misco and Haider who had two hits apiece. The duo also drove in three runs each.

Hendrickson got the start and earned the win on the pitching rubber for the Yellowjackets, scattering just four hits in the complete game win. She walked one and struck out two. Her record improves to 2-2 on the young season.

The weekend was particularly productive for Haider. The senior batted .467 with seven hits in 15 at bats. She scored five times, hit three home runs and drove in nine runs to lead the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (2-2, 0-0 WIAC) are now off until they arrive in the balmy weather of Florida for the Gene Cusic Classic, beginning March 13. While in Florida the Yellowjackets will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule, playing 14 games before closing out the year in WIAC play.
