Bethel Takes Two From Yellowjackets

Jordan Koepp had a hit and scored a run Tuesday against Bethel.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team ventured outdoors for the first time in 2015 Monday afternoon, or approximately 24 hours before their first games of the season. Those games came Tuesday, when the Yellowjackets played a non-conference doubleheader at Reynolds Field in Roseville, Minnesota on the campus of Northwestern University St. Paul. The Yellowjackets should get used to the field, as Northwestern will become a regular conference opponent when the Yellowjackets join the UMAC in time for the 2016 campaign. For the time being, however, the facility serves its purpose as a neutral site, and for the Yellowjackets, it was anything but friendly Tuesday.

Bethel 4, Yellowjackets 2

The first game of Tuesday's doubleheader was the first action of the year for the Yellowjackets. Bethel, on the other hand, already had a pair of games under its belt heading into the day. The rust showed as the Yellowjackets were slow out of the gate. They had a lone hit in each the second and fourth innings, but were unable to generate any runs.

Bethel broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring twice on four hits to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning the Yellowjackets answered, manufacturing a pair of runs of their own. Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. They went to third on a sacrifice, and then each scored on separate wild pitches and the game was tied 2-2.

The Royals closed out the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away for the 4-2 win.

Cagle had a pair of hits to pace the Yellowjackets.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) went the distance on the mound for the Yellowjackets, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. The junior right-hander didn't walk a batter and had two strikeouts.

Matt Herringshaw got the win for Bethel, pitching a complete game. He struck out five, but did walk six.

Offensively Bethel got three hits from Bret Neuville and two hits from Jarad Watts.

Bethel 14, Yellowjackets 0

The second game of the day was all Royals, as they scored early and often to blow out the Yellowjackets. Bethel pounded out the offense in the nightcap, knocking out 16 hits in the game against a trio of Yellowjacket pitchers. The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, only had two hits in the contest.

Bethel scored three runs without the benefit of a hit in the top of the first inning, using a pair of hit batters, a walk and an error to move ahead before the Yellowjackets came to bat. The Yellowjackets held them off the board in the second and third innings before a seven hit-attack produced five runs and an 8-0 lead through four innings.

As good as Neuville was in the first game, he was even better in the second game with three hits in four at bats. The big blow was a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 11-0. Bethel scored once in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh to close out the scoring in the second game.

Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) got the start in the second game for the Yellowjackets and lasted 3.2 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits. He walked one and struck out one before giving way to Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East). The senior lefty went 2.1 innings and gave up seven hits and six runs, two of which were earned. Freshman Keaton Kastberg (Green Bay, Wis.) pitched the remainder of the game for the Yellowjackets, giving up one hit in one inning.

Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) and Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) had the hits in the second game for the Yellowjackets.

In addition to Neuville, Bethel also got multi-hit games from Nik Anderson, Grant Anderson and Bryce Marquardt, each of whom had two hits.

The Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 WIAC) return to the field Wednesday morning when they take on Hamline University in a doubleheader at Minnetonka High School in the Twin Cities. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
