Yellowjackets Drop Two to Hamline

Richard Vanden Branden
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

A day after the Yellowjacket baseball team opened the season with a pair of losses to Bethel, they took on Hamline in a pair of seven-inning games. And unfortunately for them, they had the same result as the previous day, as the Yellowjackets dropped a doubleheader to the Pipers in the Twin Cities.

Hamline 3, Yellowjackets 2 (8 innings)

The Yellowjackets got things started in a good way Wednesday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) led off the game with a single up the middle and Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) followed with a single to right field, putting runners on the corners. Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) grounded out, scoring Patko to get the Yellowjackets on the board. A balk put Vold on third and two hitters later her scored to give the Yellowjackets a two-run lead before the Pipers came to the plate.

Unfortunately, the offense dried up after that and the Pipers battled back.

A ground out in the bottom of the second got the Pipers on the board. They tied the game on an RBI-single from Chris Zeller in the bottom of the sixth. After the teams went scoreless in the seventh they headed for extra innings where the Pipers scratched out the win.

And again it was Zeller who did the damage. This time an RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth provided the winning margin, giving the Pipers a 3-2 victory.

The Yellowjackets got five hits in the game, led by Patko who went 2-for-4. Vold, Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) also had hits for the Yellowjackets.

Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) pitched a complete game for the Yellowjackets, allowing three earned runs on ten hits in 7.2 innings. He didn't walk a batter and had four strikeouts.

Hamline 12, Yellowjackets 4

The second game of the day saw the Pipers roll out the offense, and despite the biggest offensive output of the young season for the Yellowjackets, they fell behind early and were never able to recover.

Hamline scored four times in the top of the first inning to jump out to the early lead. The big hit was a two-run double by Collin Olstead.

The Yellowjackets answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With Patko on, Flaherty singled and went to second on a throwing error. The error allowed Patko to score to get the Yellowjackets on the board. Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) brought Flaherty home later in the inning with a base hit and the Hamline lead was cut in half, 4-2, after one.

Hamline was undeterred, however, and continued to pour on the offense. The Pipers scored twice in the second and added single runs in each of the third and fourth innings, before scoring twice in the fifth to open up an 10-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth the Yellowjackets stopped the bleeding and scored a pair of runs themselves. With two outs in the inning, Flaherty, Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and Quinones ripped consecutive singles to load the bases. Cagle was up next and his single up the middle scored two more runs to make the score 10-4.

Hamline scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to make the final score 12-4.

Flaherty led the Yellowjacket attack in the second game, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Quinones added two hits, as the Yellowjackets had a season-best nine in the game. Cagle drove in a pair of runs.

Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland) got the start on the mound and went two innings, allowing seven earned runs on five hits. He was relieved by Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) who gave up two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. After Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) pitched a third of an inning, Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) and Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) each pitched an inning to close the game out.

The Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 WIAC) will now travel to Arizona for their annual spring trip. They will play seven games beginning with a single game March 15 against Augsburg College.
