The UW-Superior women's softball team got their Spring trip off on the right foot Friday morning, winning a pair of games over Dominican (Ill.) and Pittsburgh-Bradford at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

Superior 6, Dominican 2

Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) got the Yellowjackets (4-2) off to a fast start in the opening inning against the Stars, leading off with a single before advancing to second on error and stealing third, giving UW-Superior a runner on third with no outs. Following a Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) walk, Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) drove Wilke home with a single to left to give UW-Superior a 1-0 lead. Linzmeier then followed up by stealing home for a 2-0 UW-Superior edge after one.

The Yellowjackets doubled their lead in the bottom of the second when Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) doubled to right center and was followed by a single from Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors), who advanced to second on an errant throw. Thomfohrda scored on a ground out by Wilke before Fjeran came home on a wild-pitch for a 4-0 Yellowjacket cushion after two.

Dominican (7-3) cut the deficit to 4-2 by scoring single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

But the Yellowjackets padded their lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring twice to make the final 6-2. Haider and Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) started the rally with back-to-back singles before a Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) single brought home both runners for a 6-2 UW-Superior advantage.

From there, Yellowjacket starting pitcher Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) pitched a near-perfect final two innings to close out the victory. Hendrickson went all seven innings, allowing five hits while striking out two to pick up her third win of the season.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets were paced by Haider, who went 3-for-3 while Thomfohrda went 2-for-3 in the victory for UW-Superior

Superior 2, Pittsburgh-Bradford 0

The Yellowjackets scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pick up their second win of the day and second shutout of the 2015 campaign.
