UW-Superior picks up second-straight sweep in Florida

Whitney Brugman had two hits against Ohio Wesleyan for the Yellowjackets.

The UW-Superior women's softball team continued their Spring trip with two more wins at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. Saturday afternoon. In their opener, the Yellowjackets downed Ohio Wesleyan 10-2 before defeating Wooster 6-3 to close out the day's action.

Superior 10, Ohio Wesleyan 2

The Yellowjackets (6-2) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to by scoring 10 straight runs over the final four innings to down the Battling Bishops by run-rule after five.

Trailing 2-0 heading to the bottom of the second, UW-Superior scored three times to take a 3-2 lead after two. Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) started the rally for the Yellowjackets by doubling to left before Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) followed with single to put runners on the corners. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) brought both runners around to score with a single before advancing to second on an error. From there, Thomfohrda reached third on a passed ball and then scored on a Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) groundout, giving the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead heading to the third.

After holding Ohio Wesleyan scoreless in the top of the third, UW-Superior tacked on four more runs for a commanding 7-2 advantage. Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) got things started with a bunt base-hit before advancing to second on a ground out. Haider followed up with an RBI single, advanced to second on the resulting throw home, and then came in to score the Yellowjackets' fifth run on Brugman's single.

Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) singled in the next at-bat, sending pinch-runner Nicole Weigman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) to second with one out. After a groundout moved Weigman and Nelson to second and third, Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) reached on an error by the Battling Bishops' first baseman, allowing both Weigman and Nelson to score and up the margin to 7-2 after three.

Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) went on to score the only run of the fourth, drawing a leadoff walk before stealing second. A groundout moved Wilke to third, setting the stage for the Yellowjacket infielder to score on a passed ball and make it 8-2 heading to the fifth.

In the fifth, Nelson singled and Thomfohrda doubled to right center, bringing Nelson home for a 9-2 Yellowjackets' bulge. Misco followed up with a single, moving Thomfohrda to third base with one out. Allie Fuller (Ham Lake, Minn.) then completed the scoring for UW-Superior, notching an infield, RBI single to drive in Thomfohrda and make the final 10-2.

UW-Superior was led offensively by Haider, Brugman, Nelson and Thomfohrda, who all had two hits in the victory.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) picked up the win in the circle, pitching all five innings while allowing seven hits and striking out three.

Superior 6, Wooster 3

After falling behind 2-0 through the first inning and a half, the Yellowjackets scored three times in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead after two.

Brugman started the rally for UW-Superior by drawing a walk before Nelson doubled to right-center, putting runners on second and third. Thomfohrda then drove a two-run single up the middle, scoring both Brugman and Nelson to even matters at 2-2. Thomfohrda then came around to score on Wilke's double for a 3-2 Yellowjackets' lead.

UW-Superior added two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage. Three straight walks to Misco, Fjeran and Wilke loaded the bases before Shipman's fielder's choice plated Misco to make it 4-2. Wilke then came around to score after Shipman was caught in a rundown, giving the Yellowjackets a 5-2 cushion heading to the fifth.

Wooster plated one more run in the top of the top of fifth to cut the deficit to 5-3 heading to the bottom of the frame.

Haider responded for UW-Superior, blasting her team-leading fourth homer of the campaign in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Yellowjackets a 6-3 lead.

The Fighting Scots only managed two baserunners over the final two innings as Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) and Hendrickson combined on a seven-hitter in the circle.

Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) led the way for the Yellowjackets offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Hendrickson picked up the win, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

The Yellowjackets continue their Spring trip Monday with games against Manchester and Alfred State starting at 8 and 10 a.m. respectively.
