Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team has opened up its spring trip, as they once again take the field in Arizona.

Augsburg 13, Yellowjackets 3

The Yellowjackets opened the spring trip against Augsburg College, a team they will see later on in the trip. And after a tight start to the contest the Auggies pulled away with a big inning, scoring eight times in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach and upend the Yellowjackets 13-3.

After two scoreless innings Augsburg broke through with a single run in the top of the third inning, but in the bottom of the frame the Yellowjackets answered to tie the game. Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Two hitters later he came across to score on an RBI single by Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity).

The Yellowjackets took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) led off with a double and scored when the next hitter, Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) tripled. Cagle then scored on a ground out to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead after four.

Augsburg scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Yellowjacket lead in half. They then took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, scoring three times. The Auggies then blew the game open in the top of the ninth with an eight-run inning. The first ten hitters in the inning reached base for the Auggies. The big hits in the inning came courtesy of Jonesy Buescher and Billy Brookshaw, and Andrew Julkowski who each had two-run hits.

In the bottom of the inning the Yellowjackets got a lead off single from pinch hitter Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), but that was the extent of the offense and the Yellowjackets fell to defeat.

The Yellowjackets had six hits in the game, led by Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) who went 2-for-5. He was the only Yellowjacket with a multi-hit game. Flaherty had a hit and a run batted in and also walked twice.

Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) made his first appearance of the season and was strong, giving up two runs on nine hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out six in being tagged with the loss. Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) had a rough outing in relief, surrendering nine runs on 11 hits in 2.1 innings. Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) pitched the rest of the game, giving up two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Julkowski had a monster day for the Auggies to lead the charge offensively, going 6-for-6 with four runs batted in and scoring twice.

Yellowjackets 9, Illinois Institute of Technology 6

The Yellowjackets earned their first win of the 2015 season Tuesday, taking down the Illinois Institute of Technology 9-6.

It didn't look like a win was in the cards early, however, as I.I.T. took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Colon-Rodrigue had the big hit of the inning, driving in two runs with a double.

The Yellowjackets answered in the top of the second. With one out Quinones was hit by a pitch and Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) reached on an error. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) doubled to score one run, and then Bellin doubled in two more to even the game 3-3.

The tie game didn't last long, however, as I.I.T. scored twice in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 5-3.

Things stayed that way until the top of the sixth when Cuello singled in a run to pull the Yellowjackets back to within one. The Yellowjackets then took the lead for the first time in the game in the top of the seventh. With two on and two outs in the inning Cagle doubled, scoring both runs to make it a 6-5 game. Cagle then scored on a Quinones triple to make it a two-run Yellowjacket lead.

I.I.T. got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but the Yellowjackets returned the favor in the top of the eighth on a run scoring single by Flaherty.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth. Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) reached on an error and brought home a run in the process, plating Quinones who walked with one out, to make the final score 9-6.

I.I.T. outhit the Yellowjackets 12-8 in the game. Patko and Quinones each had two hits to lead the way for the Yellowjackets. Cagle and Bellin each drove in two runs.

Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) got the start and earned the win for the Yellowjackets, improving his record to 1-1 on the year. He pitched a complete game, giving up six runs (five earned) on 12 hits. He walked one and struck out five.

The Yellowjackets (1-5, 0-0 WIAC) will continue their spring trip schedule Wednesday, March 18 when they play a doubleheader against Dickinson State University out of North Dakota. The games will both be seven-inning contests. The first pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
