Yellowjackets split with Brockport, Stevens

The UW-Superior women's softball team split two games at the Lee County Sports Complex Tuesday, defeating Brockport 3-1 before falling to Stevens 1-0 in their second game of the day. With the split, UW-Superior is now 9-3 on the season.

Superior 3, Brockport 1

The Yellowjackets scored all three of their runs in the fourth and then relied on the strong pitching of Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) to pick up their eighth straight victory.

With the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the fourth, Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) started the inning with a single to right. Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) then reached on an error, putting runners on first and second with one out. A two-base error by the Golden Eagles' catcher allowed Linzmeier to score contests first run before a fielder's choice from Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) plated Nelson with the Yellowjackets' second run. Thomfohrda then came home on a double by Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) to give UW-Superior a 3-0 lead.

Brockport scored their only run of the game in the top of the sixth.

But Hendrickson closed the door from there, allowing just one earned run while pitching all seven innings.

Nelson, Thomfohrda, Misco and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) had the Yellowjackets' four hits for the game.

Stevens 1, Superior 0

UW-Superior suffered their first setback in Florida during a pitcher's duel that saw Stevens score the contest's only run in the bottom of the seventh.

Linzmeier and Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) had the Yellowjackets' only hits as Ducks' starting pitcher Kayla Berardi went all seven innings while striking out five without a walk.

Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) was nearly as good for UW-Superior, scattering five hits in 6.1 innings while racking up two strikeouts for the afternoon.

But the Ducks' Emily Sellitti scored the game's only run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Noelle Mulligan to give Stevens the win.

The Yellowjackets face Lasell and UMass-Dartmouth in a double-header on Thursday at the Lee County Sports Complex. Opening pitch for those two games is scheduled for eight and 10 a.m. respectively.
