Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After a day off in the "Valley of the Sun" the Yellowjacket baseball team returned to the field Wednesday and, thanks to some late-inning heroics, picked up its second win of the season before dropping the nightcap.

Yellowjackets 10, Dickinson State 7

After Dickinson State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Yellowjackets answered in a big way, plating five runs to jump out to a big lead. After the first three hitters reached base to start the inning, Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) cleared the bases, connecting for the grand slam, his first home run of the season, giving the Yellowjackets a 4-1 lead. After a strikeout, Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) walked and he came home on a triple by Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and the Yellowjackets were up four runs after one inning.

Dickinson State added another single run in the second, and again the Yellowjackets countered. This time it was Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) doing the damage, hitting a two-run home run to push the Yellowjacket lead to five runs, 7-2.

Resiliency was the key for Dickinson State, as they chipped away at the Yellowjacket lead. The Bluehawks shaved the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third, then scored a single run in the top of the fourth inning to pull to within two. They made the comeback complete with a two-run sixth, and the teams entered the seventh and final inning in a 7-7 deadlock.

Yellowjacket pitcher Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland) set the Bluehawks down in order in the top half of the inning, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the opening game of the doubleheader.

In the bottom of the seventh Holden walked to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved Holden into scoring position, Quinones was intentionally walked to put the double play back in order. Following a pitching change Yellowjacket outfielder Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) send the Yellowjacket faithful into the break happy, breaking the tie and giving the Yellowjackets the win. With the count at 1-1, Mattson took the third pitch he saw over the wall, giving the Yellowjackets their third home run of the game and a 10-7 win.

Despite only having seven hits in the game, the Yellowjackets made the most of things, scoring all of their runs via the long ball. Mattson was 2-for-3 with a pair of extra base hits and three runs batted in to lead the Yellowjackets. Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) also had two hits in the game.

Kyle Gauger (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) got the start in the game for the Yellowjackets, going three innings and giving up five earned runs on nine hits before giving way to Lundequam. Lundequam went the rest of the way and got the win, evening his record at 1-1. He allowed two earned runs on three hits to go along with two walks and a strikeout in four innings.

Jacob Hignite had three hits and drove in two runs to lead Dickinson State.

Dickinson State 12, Yellowjackets 5

The offense was still on display when the teams came back for the second game of the day, but in the second one it was all Bluehawks, as they jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 12-5 victory.

The Yellowjackets grabbed the lead early, manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning. Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) walked to lead off the game and Vold followed with a single. Vold was erased on a double play that sent Bellin to third, and he scored on a balk to make it a 1-0 game.

Unfortunately the Bluehawks answered, taking the lead in the bottom of the inning thanks to a trio of run-scoring singles.

With one out in the top of the second the Yellowjackets worked a pair of runners into scoring position, and Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) brought home Quinones with a sacrifice fly to right field to pull the Yellowjackets to within one.

In the bottom of the second Dickinson State scored a pair of runs, both of them unearned due to a Yellowjacket error and the Bluehawks led 5-2.

The Yellowjackets rallied to tie the game in the top of the third inning. With two on and two out in the inning, Quinones connected, hitting his first home run of the season, tying the score 5-5.

Dickinson State, however, took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, scratching out a pair of RBI singles to make it a 7-5 game. The Bluehawks scored once in the fourth inning, three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to salt the game away and earn the split for the day.

The Yellowjackets had nine hits in the second game, led by Vold and Pitts who had two each.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got the start for the Yellowjackets and was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits over 3.2 innings. He is now 0-3 on the year. He gave way to Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) who allowed three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) pitched the rest of the way, giving up one run on three hits in 1.2 innings.

Dickinson State pounded out 19 hits in the game, led by Jordan Teschler, Ryan Risse, and Jeff VanCleave who had three hits each.

The Yellowjackets (2-6, 0-0 WIAC) will play a single game against Augsburg College Thursday, March 19. The game will be played under the lights with an 8:30 p.m. start time.
