Dominant Pitching Foils Yellowjackets

Grant Schneider pitched seven strong innings for the Yellowjackets Thursday.
Box Score

Augsburg 8, Yellowjackets 0

After splitting a doubleheader Wednesday the Yellowjacket baseball team returned to the diamond Thursday to play a night game against Augsburg, a team they had met earlier in the week. In the first meeting the Auggies used a big inning late to pull away from the Yellowjackets and earn the decisive victory. In the rematch, no such inning was needed, as the Yellowjackets were shut down from the get-go by a dominant pitching performance.

Senior Tanner Oakes pitched a complete game for the Auggies, scattering four hits and striking out seven as the Auggies cruised past the Yellowjackets 8-0 in Tucson, Arizona.

Oakes faced the minimum number of hitters through the first three innings, keeping the Yellowjackets off the board. Yellowjacket starter Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) matched Oakes, facing just one more than the minimum through three innings.

All that changed in the fourth as the Auggies came alive offensively, capitalizing on a Yellowjacket error to score three unearned runs and take the 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning the Yellowjackets got their first base runner when Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) led off with a single, but two hitters later he was erased and the shutout remained intact.

Both pitchers continued to shut down the opposition and the score remained 3-0 through six innings. In the top of the seventh the Auggies got back-to-back hits to start the inning and both runners came around to score, making it a 5-0 game. Seven innings also spelled the end of the night for Schneider, as he gave way to Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski). McDermid retired the first batter he faced in the eighth before giving up a single and three straight walks to push across the sixth Augsburg run. McDermid worked out of the jam in impressive fashion, limiting the damage to just that one run.

In the bottom of the eighth the Yellowjackets got a two-out triple from Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel), the first time all game the Yellowjackets got a runner as far as third base, but he was stranded there to end the inning.

McDermid came back out for the ninth, but after walking a man and hitting a batter, gave way to Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn). Stone worked out of the inning, but not before the Auggies scored twice more to make the final score 8-0.

Bellin, Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity), Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa), and Pitts had the four hits for the Yellowjackets. Schneider, despite a strong outing on the mound took the loss for the Yellowjackets, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six in falling to 0-2 on the season.

Bryce Pruszinske had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs to lead the Auggies, who also got a multi-hit game from Abe Welckle.

The Yellowjackets (2-7, 0-0 WIAC) are off Friday before they return to action in the final game of their spring trip. Saturday they will face WIAC opponent Gustavus Adolphus College beginning at 1:00 p.m.
