Yellowjackets Win Fourth Straight

Sarah Hendrickson
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

The warm Florida sunshine apparently agrees with the Yellowjacket softball team. After losing to the Stevens Institute of Technology the Yellowjackets have now won four straight, and 11 of 12 at the Gene Cusic Classic and stand at 13-3 on the year.

Yellowjackets 5, Lasell 2

It was a pitcher's duel early as the teams were scoreless through the first four innings. In the top of the fifth inning the Yellowjackets broke through to grab the lead. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) did the damage, connecting for her first home run of the season to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

Things stayed that way until the top of the seventh inning when the Yellowjackets blew the game open.

With one out in the inning Taipale singled. Pinch hitter Sam Simonson then reached on a big error, advancing all the way to third and scoring Taipale to double the Yellowjacket lead. Pinch hitter Nicle Weigman followed with a run-scoring single to make it 3-0. After a sacrifice bunt Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) knocked out back-to-back doubles to push the Yellowjacket lead to 5-0.

Lasell scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run at the plate, but the offense was shut down and the Yellowjackets earned the 5-2 victory.

Linzmeier paced the Yellowjackets with three hits in the game, while Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) and Thomfohrda each had two. For the game the Yellowjackets pounded out 12 hits.

Macy Hanson () got the start and went the distance for the Yellowjackets, giving up two runs on three hits in seven innings. She walked just one and struck out 13.

Yellowjackets 4, UMass-Dartmouth 0

The second game Thursday followed a pattern similar to the first, as both teams struggled to get the offense going early.

Scoreless through three innings, the Yellowjackets broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Taipale walked and stole a base before Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) walked to put two runners on. Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) followed with a single to load the bases and Sasha Fjeran (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) drove in the game's first run with a base hit, giving the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets used some timely hitting and a pair of UMD errors to blow the game open in the bottom of the fifth.

Thomfohrda singled, went to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third. She scored on when Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) reached on an error to make it 2-0. Taipale then drove in a run with a double, and later scored on an error to push the Yellowjacket lead to 4-0.

From there Yellowjacket pitcher Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) shut the door. The sophomore hurler was masterful, allowing just three hits over seven innings. She didn't walk a batter and struck out four.

The Yellowjackets made the most of their opportunities, scoring four runs on just five hits in the game.

Yellowjackets 3, Manchester 1

For the second time on the trip the Yellowjackets took a game from Manchester University. Friday the Yellowjackets scored single runs in the first, second, and sixth innings to earn the 3-1 victory.

In the first Thomfohrda singled and Linzmeier reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Haider followed with a single, scoring Thomfohrda and giving the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

In the second Weigman led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Fjeran reached on an error that scored Weigman and the Yellowjackets were up 2-0.

The game stayed that way until the top of sixth. Taipale walked and a pair of sacrifices moved her to third base. Misco followed with a single that plated Taipale and it was 3-0.

Manchester scored its lone run of the game in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late and the Yellowjackets earned the win.

The Yellowjackets had six hits in the game, with six different players coming up with one each.

On the pitching rubber Hanson and Hendrickson combined to allow just one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

Yellowjackets 6, Stevens Institute of Technology 4

The second game Friday featured a rematch of the one game the Yellowjackets have dropped to date in Florida, and some late-game heroics allowed the Yellowjackets to avenge that single loss.

With one out in the bottom of the first Thomfohrda doubled to left field, and two hitters later Haider singled to right field to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead.

Stevens tied the game in the top of the second, then took the lead when they pushed two runs across on five hits in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-1 game in Stevens' favor.

The Yellowjackets rallied, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) led off the inning with a walk and went to second when Wilke reached on a fielder's choice. Shipman scored on an error, and two hitters later Linzmeier drove home Wilke and suddenly the score was even.

The teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh and it was onto extra innings.

Stevens scored in the top of the eighth to push themselves to the cusp of victory, but the Yellowjackets had other ideas.

In the bottom of the eighth Linzmeier started the inning on second base. Haider then singled to put runners on the corners. She followed with a stolen base, to put both the tying and winning runs in scoring position. There would be no need for the runners to sprint home, however. Pinch hitter Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) came to the plate and drove a pitch over the fence, and the three-run shot gave the Yellowjackets a 6-4 victory.

Aside from Nelson's walk-off home run, Haider led the Yellowjackets, going 2-for-4, scoring a run and driving in a run.

Hendrickson was again a monster on the pitching rubber for the Yellowjackets. She gave up four runs (three earned) on 13 hits over eight innings pitched. She walked one and struck out two while improving to 10-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets will close out their spring trip with a pair of games Saturday, March 21. They will take on Knox College and UW-Platteville in a non-conference game before heading home for the WIAC portion of their schedule.
