Saturday marked the final day of the Florida spring trip for the Yellowjacket softball team, completing a stretch of 14 games in eight days before they embark on a furious tour through the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. While the first game of the day was against a non-conference opponent, the day's second came against WIAC foe UW-Platteville, giving the Yellowjackets a glimpse of what is to come in conference play.

Yellowjackets 9, Knox 8

Knox College was the first opponent of the day Saturday, and the Prairie Fire jumped out to the early lead, scoring a single run in the top of the first and two more in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third the Yellowjackets got on the board. Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) led off the inning with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. Two hitters later Wilke scored, coming home on a Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) single to cut the Knox lead to 3-1.

Knox got that run, and then some, back in the fourth. The team hit for the cycle in the inning and scored five times to push the lead to 8-1.

The Yellowjackets were undeterred, however, and climbed right back into the game in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) singled and Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) walked to load the bases and Wilke followed with a two-run single to make it 8-3. An error brought another run home and Linzmeier then walked to load the bases once again. Two hitters later Nicole Weigman (White Bear Lake, Minn.) brought a run home with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to three. With runners on second and third and two out Sam Simonson cleared the bases, singling home two and after four the Yellowjackets were down by a run, 8-7.

After Knox was set down in the fifth the Yellowjackets grabbed the lead.

With one out pinch hitter Mikayla Haynes (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) singled, stole second, went to third on a Wilke single and scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) then singled to score Wilke, and the Yellowjackets took the 9-8 lead.

From there pitching and defense helped extinguish the Prairie Fire, as Knox mustered just two hits the rest of the way.

Wilke led the Yellowjackets in the opener, going 3-for-4 while scoring twice and driving in two runs. Linzmeier had a good day at the plate for the Yellowjackets as well, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Macy Hanson () started for the Yellowjackets and pitched the first inning before giving way to Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes), who pitched two innings. Hendrickson took over in the fourth and pitched the rest of the way, earning the win, improving her record to 12-2.

Platteville 5, Yellowjackets 2

Last season the Yellowjackets took on UW-Platteville while in Florida, and they came out of that game victorious, downing the Pioneers 4-0 en route to a perfect record on the trip. It was not to be this time around, as the Pioneers turned the tables and earned the spring trip victory.

Platteville scored a single run in the first inning and then added two more in the third to go up 3-0. The Yellowjackets meanwhile, struggled at the plate, with just one hit through three innings. Down three the Yellowjackets found some offsense in the fourth.

Linzmeier led off with a single and later in the inning scored on a sacrifice fly to get the Yellowjackets on the board. Two innings later Linzmeier drove in a run on a ground out and the Yellowjackets were within one, 3-2.

The Pioneers put some distance between themselves in the Yellowjackets, scoring twice in the top of the sixth to make the final score 5-2.

All of the offense for the Yellowjackets came from the top of the order, as the top five hitters accounted for all of the team's hits. The Yellowjackets were outhit 9-5 in the game, and their four errors on defense helped the Pioneers earn the win.

Hendrickson, who has been outstanding in the early part of the season was tagged with the loss in the contest, falling to 12-3 on the year. She pitched a complete game, allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Yellowjackets (14-4, 0-0 WIAC) are now off until April 2 when they will face UW-Stevens Point to open the conference season. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Stevens Point.
