Yellowjackets Split with Gustavus

Alex Quinones had four hits in two games against Gustavus for the Yellowjackets Saturday.

The Yellowjacket baseball team played its final games of the spring trip to Arizona Saturday, squaring off in a pair of seven-inning games against Gustavus Adolphus.

Yellowjackets 5, Gustavus 4

In the opener Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) was strong early, facing just one more batter than the minimum through four innings, allowing the offense to get going and build an early lead.

The Yellowjackets batted around in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four times to move ahead 4-0. Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) got things started with a double and scored when Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) followed with a triple. A sacrifice fly then brought Quinones home with the game's second run. Two hitters later Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) singled and then moved into scoring position when he stole second. Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) reached on an error that scored Patko, and Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) followed with a run-scoring single to stake the Yellowjackets to a 4-0 lead.

Quinones led off the bottom of the third with a base hit and came around to score on a fielders choice to push the lead to five.

But the Gusties weren't going to go away quietly. In the top of the fifth they scored a single run before stringing together a series of hits to plate three runs in the top of the sixth, making it a one-run game.

That was as close as they would get, however, as Wiblin worked out of the jam in the sixth and set the Gusties down in order in the seventh, preserving the win.

Vold and Quinones led the Yellowjackets with two hits apiece in the game. On the mound Wiblin earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-0. He allowed four runs on nine hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven.

Gustavus 3, Yellowjackets 0

The second game of the day featured more strong pitching. For the Yellowjackets, starter Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) made his third start of the season and turned in another strong performance, giving up just three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings. Unfortunately, his performance was overshadowed by that of Gustavus pitchers Michael Strelow and Christopher Kelly. The Gustavus duo shut down the Yellowjackets, combining to allow just three hits over seven innings to gain the shutout win and the split on the day.

An error to lead off the bottom of the second inning came back to haunt the Yellowjackets, as Joe Melles later came around to score the eventual game-winning run. Single runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings propelled the Gusties to the win.

Quinones had another good game at the plate for the Yellowjackets, banging out a pair of doubles to lead the Yellowjackets. Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) had the other hits for the Yellowjackets.

Garrett Fuchs had two hits and scored twice for the Gusties in the second game.

The Yellowjackets (3-8, 0-0 WIAC) return to action Tuesday, March 23 when they travel to Duluth to take on the College of St. Scholastica. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Wade Stadium. The game will be the first at the venerable ballpark since renovations saw a new playing surface installed, as well as other improvements made. There will be a 15-minute ceremony prior to the game to celebrate the re-opening of the facility.
