Yellowjackets Drop Border Battle Tilt

Damian Wiblin struck out six over seven innings Tuesday vs. St. Scholastica.
Box Score

St. Scholastica 6, Yellowjackets 0

It was a day filled with celebration Tuesday, as the Yellowjackets took the field at Duluth's Wade Stadium against the College of St. Scholastica. The game was the first played on the new artificial surface at the historic ballpark, which is in the midst of a major renovation project. Duluth Mayor Don Ness was on hand, addressing the fans and throwing out the first pitch prior to the first contest of the year in Duluth.

And that was the extent of the celebration as far as the Yellowjackets were concerned.

St. Scholastica jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back, downing the Yellowjackets 6-0.

The loss was the second in a row by way of the shutout for the Yellowjackets, who have now gone 20 innings without pushing a run across the plate.

The Saints got back to back hits to start the bottom of the first and eventually pushed both runners across to take the 2-0 lead. Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) then settled down and got into a groove for the next several innings. Saints' starter Daniel Wood didn't need anytime to settle in, baffling Yellowjacket hitters from the beginning, getting through the order once before the Yellowjackets picked up their first hits.

Those hits came in the top of the fourth inning, but both runners were stranded on the basepaths. In the bottom of the inning the Saints struck again, as Jake Kuschke singled up the middle, scoring two, doubling the lead over the Yellowjackets to 4-0.

St. Scholastica scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to add to the lead.

The Yellowjackets put together a threat in the top of the ninth, loading the bases on walks to Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) and getting a single from Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner), but they were unable to push a run across.

For the game the Yellowjackets had five hits - all singles. St. Scholastica, meanwhile, had 10 hits. Trevor Bernsdorf and Steven Neutzling each had to hits to pace the Saints.

Wiblin takes the loss for the Yellowjackets, falling to 1-1 for the season. He gave up all six runs on 10 hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out six. Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) relieved Wiblin, pitching a perfect eighth inning and picking up one strikeout along the way.

Four pitchers took the hill for the Saints. Wood earned the win, scattering four hits over seven innings. He didn't walk anyone ands struck out five.

The Yellowjackets (3-9, 0-0 WIAC) will stay on the road and travel to defending NCAA champion UW-Whitewater for a four game series April 2 and 3. Games both days are set to get underway at 12:00 p.m.
