Whitewater Sweeps Yellowjackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The WIAC season continues for the Yellowjacket softball team, meaning things won't get any easier as the season wares on. Saturday the Yellowjackets played a pair of games at UW-Whitewater, and the Warhawks entered the games ranked No. 11 in the nation.

Whitewater 10, Yellowjackets 2 (6 innings)

The Warhawks came out in the opener and played like the 11th ranked team in the nation, having a big first inning and scoring in every inning but the fourth to pull away and defeat the Yellowjackets 10-2 in six innings.

It was the Yellowjackets that opened the scoring, however, as they took advantage of a pair of Whitewater errors to get the game's first run.

With two outs Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) reached on an error and quickly stole second to move into scoring position. She scored when Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) reached on an error to stake the Yellowjackets to the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning Whitewater exploded, scoring four times to take the lead for good. The first three hitters reached on extra base hits to push Whitewater ahead 2-1. A single and a ground out scored two more runners and it was 4-1 after one inning.

Whitewater scored single runs in the second and third innings to make it a 6-1 game.

In the top of the fifth the Yellowjackets got a run back. This time it was Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) doing the damage, driving a 2-2 pitch over the fence in center field to bring the Yellowjackets back to within 6-2.

Whitewater then scored a single run in the bottom of the inning and closed the game out in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single by Kelynn Sporer. The rally brought the opening game to a close, with the Warhawks earning the 10-2 win.

The Yellowjackets had four hits in the game, with Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity), Linzmeier and Taipale all getting one apiece.

Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) got the start for the Yellowjackets and had a rough outing, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits in just two innings. She was relieved in the third inning by Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) who allowed four earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. She walked two and struck out one.

On the other side Whitewater pounded out 16 hits, getting hits from eight different players. Mallory Klotz and Maggie Hansen had three hits each to lead the way.

Whitewater 6, Yellowjackets 0

The second game didn't go a long way in providing drama, either, as the Yellowjackets were shut down offensively, picking up just three hits as the Warhawks completed the sweep with a 6-0 win.

Sporer, who had the big hit in the sixth inning of the first game shut the Yellowjackets down in the circle in game two, pitching a complete game and striking out six while scattering three hits.

After a scoreless first two innings the Warhawks scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the third, using a sacrifice fly to move ahead 1-0. Sporer then walked with the bases loaded, and later in the inning used a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game. A Devan DuCharme two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth provided the final runs, making the winning margin 6-0.

Wilke, Haider, and Thomfohrda had the hits for the Yellowjackets.

Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) made the start for the Yellowjackets and took the loss, giving up four earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. She walked three and struck out three. Hendrickson came in and pitched the rest of the way, giving up two earnd runs on three hits in 1.1 innings.

DuCharme and Hannah Taylor had three hits each to lead Whitewater.

The Yellowjackets (15-7, 1-3 WIAC) will travel to UW-Oshkosh to take on the Titans Sunday, April 12. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
