Yellowjackets Swept by Titans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After dropping a pair of games at Whitewater yesterday, the Yellowjacket softball team was looking to get back in the win column Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh. The softball gods were not on their side, however, as they dropped a heartbreaker in the opener before losing in five innings in the second.

Oshkosh 4, Yellowjackets 3

Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Yellowjackets had a 3-2 edge before the Titans rallied. Erika Berry walked to lead off the inning and Yellowjacket Head Coach replaced pitcher Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) with Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), who started the game on the rubber, but Hendrickson was unable to shut the door. The first batter she faced was Katie Koepsel and her double brought home Berry to tie the game. Three hitters later with one out Brianna Witter singled home the winning run to give the Titans a 4-3, come-from-behind victory.

Oshkosh opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, turning a hit and two errors into a 1-0 lead. It could have been worse. The Titans left the bases loaded in the frame, but the Yellowjackets wiggled out of trouble.

The Yellowjackets took the lead in the top of the second. With one out Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) reached base and came around to score on a pinch-hit double by Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) to give them a 2-1 lead.

Oshkosh tied the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.

For the second time in the game the Yellowjackets would take the lead, this time in the top of the sixth. With one out Misco did the damage, connecting for a home run over the left field fence and the Yellowjackets moved ahead 3-2. They put a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but they were unable to score an insurance run, and left the margin too slim, setting the table for Oshkosh's final-inning heroics.

The Yellowjackets had just four hits in the game. Misco went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Taipale and Kari Shipman (Frazee, Minn.) had the other hits.

Hendrickson got the start and took the loss for the Yellowjackets, falling to 12-6 on the year. She allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings. She also had five walks. Hanson gave up one earned run on one hit in one inning of work.

Oshkosh 8, Yellowjackets 0

The first game of the day was a thriller, but all of the drama was used up early as the second contest of the day lacked intrigue, with the Titans winning going away. Oshkosh scored at least one run in every inning, shutting out the Yellowjackets 8-0.

Clare Robbe shut down the Yellowjacket offense, pitching a complete-game shut out and scattering just three hits. She struck out four.

Offensively Hayley Bayreuther got things started with a home run to lead off the game. Oshkosh scored three times in the second, with two of the runs coming on a double from Koepsel. The Titans scored once in each of the third and fourth innings, before scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Yellowjackets away.

Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato), Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette), and Shipman had the hits for the Yellowjackets.

Hendrickson got the start and pitched the first two innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) went the rest of the way, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits in two-plus innings. Each Yellowjacket pitcher walked one.

Bayreuther, Koepsel, and Emily Mallek each had two hits for the Titans, who had 12 as a team in the game.

The Yellowjackets (15-9, 1-5 WIAC) are scheduled to host UW-Platteville Saturday, April 18 at Liebaert Field in Superior. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The games will be the first home games played by the Yellowjackets in Superior since May 2012. The games can be watched live on the iFan Sports Network.
