Shelly Misco had four hits for the Yellowjackets Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Friday was a special day for the Yellowjacket softball team. Not only were they playing under clear blue skies with temperatures in the low 70s, but they were playing a home game in Superior, something that hasn't happened since April 29, 2012, thanks to Mother Nature's cruel sense of humor. For those keeping score at home, that's a span of 1,084 days, or 94 consecutive games away from Superior.

Friday's guests were the Eagles from UW-La Crosse. The Eagles entered the game with a 21-7 mark, including a perfect 6-0 record in WIAC play. The Yellowjackets, meanwhile, were trying to snap a four-game losing streak in conference action, but they will have to wait another day, as the Eagles keep on rolling, sweeping the Yellowjackets.

La Crosse 6, Yellowjackets 1

The opening game Friday got off to an ominous start, as La Crosse's Greta Gumness took Yellowjacket starter Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) deep to make it 1-0. Katrina O'Keefe tripled to lead off the second for La Crosse and later scored on a fielder's choice to stretch the lead to 2-0.

The Yellowjackets scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second. Kristen Haider (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Haider came around to score when Whitney Brugman (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) reached on an error and the Yellowjackets were within one, 2-1.

That's as close as the home team would get in the first game. La Crosse would score a single run in the fourth and add two more in the fifth. They scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth, making the final score 6-1.

The Yellowjackets had chances throughout, putting multiple runners on base in the third and seventh innings, but they were unable to put enough of a rally together to add to their run total.

Shelly Misco (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) had a big game for the Yellowjackets, accounting for three of the team's five hits. She was 3-for-4 in the game. Haider and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) had the other hits for the Yellowjackets.

Hendrickson went the distance for the Yellowjackets, taking the loss and falling to 12-8 on the year. She allowed six runs (four earned) on 14 hits in seven innings. She walked two and struck out one.

Four players had multiple-hit games for La Crosse.

La Crosse 5, Yellowjackets 2

Like the opener, game two began with Gumness getting on base. This time she reached on an error to lead off the game and came around to score on a sacrifice fly, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead after one inning. La Crosse scored a single run in the third inning, two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning to push ahead 5-0.

The biggest inning of the game for the Yellowjackets was the bottom of the sixth. Brittany Thomfohrda (Cushing, Wis./Unity) and Misco started things with back-to-back singles. Haider grounded into a double play, leaving Misco at second with two outs. Misco came around to score on a single by Megan Nelson (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) and the Yellowjackets were on the board. Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn.) walked to put two runners on, and after a pitching change Katie Wilke (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) singled, scoring Nelson and it was 5-2.

Things got interesting when Linzmeier reached on an error, loading the bases and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the person of Shelby Gerken (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), but La Crosse pitcher Katie Klein retired her on strikes to preserve the lead.

In the bottom of the seventh the Yellowjackets once again put the brought the tying run to the plate, but with one out Klein wiggled out of trouble, retiring the final two hitters and preserving the win and the sweep for the Eagles.

The Yellowjackets pounded out ten hits in the game. Nelson and Thomfohrda each had two hits, as eight Yellowjacket starters had hits in the game.

Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Peguot Lakes) got the start in the circle and pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on five hits in seven innings. Just one run allowed by White was earned as the Yellowjacket defense struggled, committing seven errors in the game. White struck out two in the game, and fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

Brittany Baldwin had two of the five hits in the game for La Crosse.

The Yellowjackets (15-11, 1-7 WIAC) will entertain UW-Platteville Saturday, April 18 at Liebaert Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
