Yellowjackets Suffer Saturday Sweep

Brady Flaherty had five hits in eight at bats against Oshkosh Saturday.

Friday afternoon it was the Yellowjacket softball team that got to play its first home game since the 2012 season. Saturday, it was the baseball team's turn, taking the field at Ted Whereatt Field for the first time since losing a doubleheader to UW-Whitewater in May 2012. They didn't get the same weather softball did Friday, but they were thrilled to be playing a game on their own field nonetheless.

Unfortunately, all of the excitement of playing at home was curtailed when the Yellowjackets struggled to generate offense and dropped a pair of games to UW-Oshkosh on a brisk Saturday afternoon in Superior.

Oshkosh 8, Yellowjackets 0

The opening game was all about Oshkosh starter Peter Jewell, who twirled a gem on the mound for the Titans, shutting down the Yellowjackets and earning the complete game victory. Jewell gave up just eight hits and walk two while striking out six, avoiding trouble for the most part throughout the game. When the Yellowjackets did get a threat going, baserunning gaffes doomed them and let the Titans off the hook. Jewell played a big role in that, as he picked off three runners in the game.

On the other side Yellowjacket starter Damian Wiblin (La Crosse, Wis./Logan) got into trouble early, throwing 37 pitches in the first inning, leading to a pair of Oshkosh runs. Oshkosh got hits from each of their first three hitters, and Tyler Kozlowski drove in a pair to make it 2-0 early.

The Titans scored a single run in the second before denting Wiblin and the Yellowjackets for three more runs in the top of the sixth. The big blow of the inning came courtesy of a two-run single by Andy Brahier. In the eighth Oshkosh scored runs on consecutive doubles by Kozlowski and Brahier to push the lead to 8-0.

That was more than enough offense for Jewell. The Yellowjackets threatened in the fourth, putting runners on second and third, but they weren't able to capitalize. After that Jewell was in control to get the win.

Brady Flaherty (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity), Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West), and Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) each had two hits to lead the Yellowjackets, who had eight hits in the game.

Wiblin went six innings for the Yellowjackets and was charged with the loss, falling to 1-4 for the year. He gave up six runs (three earned) on 10 hits. He walked two and struck out six before giving way to Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) after throwing 150 pitches through six innings. Stone threw the final three innings, giving up two runs on two hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Brahier went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs for Oshkosh.

Oshkosh 11, Yellowjackets 4

The second game started out strong for the Yellowjackets, as starter Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central) faced one more than the minimum through two innings. On the other side Oshkosh starter Jesse Sustachek matched the Yellowjacket right hander.

Oshkosh got the scoring started in the top of the third inning, as Jacob Pohlman followed a pair of singles with a double into a stiff breeze coming from right field, scoring two, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead. They would push the edge to three before the inning was out.

Vanden Branden then settled down, and shut down the Titans for the next three innings, keeping the Yellowjackets in the game. That changed in the seventh when Cooper Lang, in just his third at bat of the season, knocked one over the fence in left center field to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Yellowjackets finally scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the seventh. Lucas Gregory came on in relief of Sustachek and retired the first two hitters he faced, including Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) on a strikeout, but the pitch was wild and Pitts reached base. An error then put Vold on and moved Pitts to second. Two hitters later Flaherty ripped a single up the middle, bringing home Pitts and cutting the Oshkosh lead to 4-1.

That is as close as the Yellowjackets would get, as the Titans answered with a big ninth inning. Lang started things by reaching on an error, and he would make the second out of the inning a while later. In between the Titans picked up six hits and scored seven times to blow the game open, taking an 11-1 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth the Yellowjackets did put together a small rally, scoring three times against a pair of Oshkosh pitchers, but it wouldn't be enough.

Pitts and Vold started the inning with back-to-back singles and Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Flaherty walked to force in the second run of the game for the Yellowjackets. After a pitching change Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) struck out, but again the third strike came on a wild pitch, allowing all runners to move up and bringing in the third Yellowjacket run. A ground out brought in the final run of the game for the Yellowjackets, before Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) was retired to close out the 11-4 Oshkosh win.

The Yellowjackets had eight hits in the game, led by Flaherty who picked up three and also drove in a run.

Oshkosh had 13 hits, getting three apiece from John Eagan and Noah Polcyn.

Vanden Branden pitched seven innings for the Yellowjackets, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He struck out six and fell to 1-5 on the year with the loss. Riley Grandson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) pitched the next inning-and-a-third and gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits. Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) recorded the final two outs on the mound for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (4-21, 0-10 WIAC) will entertain the Titans for two more games Sunday, April 18. First pitch from Ted Whereatt Field is set for 12:00 p.m. The game can be seen live online through UW-Superior's official online streaming partner, the iFan Sports Network.

Weather Note: Inclement weather is expected in the Superior area through Saturday night and all day Sunday, potentially postponing Sunday's games until Monday. Stay tuned to uwsyellowjackets.com for Yellowjacket baseball scheduling information.
